But if you think abortion should be legal, then this is a legitimate counter-point. If the woman has sovereignty over her body and all things in it, why doesn't the man have any sovereignty?

The sovereignty over your body and all things in it stops when the sperm resides inside the female.

I want everyone to remember their feelings on this issue the next time there is some deadbeat dead thread with a guy who has 12+ kids.

Right, but the point is that women can opt out legally whenever they want, while a man has no option to opt out.

IMO, nobody should be able to opt out. If the woman can whenever she wants though, the man shouldn't be legally obligated to 18 years of being broke.

As long as abortion is legal, men should be able to legally opt out (they are still scum, this isn't the point however)

If abortion was illegal, then men should NOT be able to legally opt out.

So you would rather enact a law that you feel is overall worse for society, just to be "fair"

no...you said even if it was a good idea

I took that to mean even if it didn't make society worse it would still be a bad idea

We already have an option. It's called a vasectomy.

That's certainly one of two solutions that I could see. I suppose the debate would be if allowing the fathers the right to be as equally irresponsible as the mothers is a net gain or net loss to society vs the alternative of both parties be responsible for parenthood?

That's probably going to be a short debate.

People are advocating for the ability to easily walk away from their children.

Serious question (I don't know the answer)... "safe haven" laws exist allowing a parent or parents to surrender their child to the state, in some states surrendering their parental rights and responsibilities. Essentially, a legal post-birth abortion of parental responsibility. There have even been cases where parents surrendered teens that they just didn't want to deal with... fricked up, but at the time legal.

In a case where the parents aren't together, if a mother did that, I certainly assume (and hope) that a father would be able to claim the child and care for it. Would he be able to go after child support from the mother? Or would she have absolved herself from responsibility?

I honestly don't know... never had to worry about it personally.

Meh, I get that viewpoint, but regardless of your gender, you are a POS if you opt out of something you caused. It's the man's fault for not using protection AND the female's fault for choosing some idiot to frick around with.

You sure you're not talking about an unmarried father without custody, and not a married father with custody?

Your assumption is that I'm advocating one way or another when I'm clearly doing nothing more than pointing out how abortion not only eliminates the child's right to life but also heavily tilts the balance of reproductive rights in favor of women.

Ok, I wasn't pointing directly at you. But IMO enacting the law should be based on whats best for society, not based on what rights the mother currently has.

Of course it is.

It is an extreme

That's not what it's terrible. Your analogy is not applicable to the topic.

My point still stands - boys who don't want to be fathers shouldn't be climaxing inside of a woman. This isn't about equality, this is about people who don't want to deal with the consequences of their decisions.

It is absolutely about equality. The discussion centers around abortion being legal. Why are you holding the man to higher standards, while the woman can simply decide to have her child killed because she doesn't want to be a parent?

The woman is given an easy out even though she didn't practice safe sex.

If abortion was illegal, then you'd have a point.

It's also lazy to not do any critical thinking about the subject at hand.

Agree 100%, but all we do legally is support POS's, men and women, and their terrible decision-making.

Because SOMEONE has to be held to a higher standard. Children are the losers in all of this and men arguing for the right to walk away from any responsibility is detrimental. We shouldn't lower ourselves to that standard.

Why are people bribing up 'pos' and stuff of that nature?

Your feelings of someone personally or anyone else's feelings mean shite in the situation being discussed.

Society may see it fit to allow women the right to eliminate their responsibilities (and will never go back on that), it's now in society's best interest to continue undermining the reproductive rights of men.

The fairness, responsibility, and equality aspects of this debate are entirely independent from the elements that weigh what is best for society.
