yes will be working for Tulane. Thanks for the info.

Lusher/Willow is a no brainer then.

Plenty of nice areas and houses within walking distance to both Lusher/Willow Campuses, as well as Tulane and Loyola Campuses.

I was told around Tulane (uptown, garden district) is not that bad.

First, the Garden District is not near Tulane and is a whole other story. It is true that there some nice neighborhoods uptown around Tulane. But define “not that bad” when it comes to crime. And I’d hate to have to navigate public schools in Orleans.

Garden District is nice if you can afford it

30 and no kids. Just have family with young kids on both sides of the river so know a bit about schools on the southshore. The JP magnets (Metairie Academy, Haynes, Kenner Discovery, Pat Taylor) are great while the regular schools are terrible and have been on a rapid decline. The Orleans magnets (Ben Franklin, Lusher) are good but your kid will come out a hard-core leftist.

the 9th ward is very underrated and a great place to raise a family.

OP your best bet is to either find another place to ask or come visit. You’re not going to get much decent advice here unfortunately.

My wife and I lived uptown for 3/4 years and I love the area. We moved to Old Metairie for space, but if you can afford uptown I would have no problem raising a family there.

Public schools are all shite in Orleans and Jefferson besides a handful (Metairie Academy, Lusher, Ben Franklin) but you have to test into them.

Uptown, Lakeview, Bucktown, Old Metairie, and river ridge is where I’d start if I were you. Expand your search through Metairie from there.

Metairie east of Clearview Pkway and north of Airline Hwy is fine and safe. South of Airline is mostly ghetto/white trash while west of Clearview has become Central America.

Is your job with Tulane? If so live in Orleans Parish so you can get your kids into their associated charter schools.

Other than that Orleans Parish is open enrollment (one App), there are a bunch of charter systems you can pick from. You can live in NO East(don't) and go to school in Lakeview, Uptown, or Algiers.

If you live in the suburbs you will go to the local school. Look at Gretna and Belle Chase on the Westbank for a short commute to Uptown.

Lusher is Tulane’s little bother. If you work at Tulane your kids go to Lusher no questions asked

I mean. It’s 5-10 minutes. In most any other city, it would be considered basically the same neighborhood.

As far as PUBLIC schools, and schools professionals might want to send their kids, Orleans arguably has better available options than Jefferson, but I wouldn’t choose either.

Try Metairie north of West Esplanade and east of Bonnabel. Lots of teardowns in that area.

$300k tear downs plus $600k to build. If you got a cool $1million nice area to build a house. Low crime, walking on the lake, good seafood restaurants, great area.

Patrick Taylor and Kenner Discovery aren’t terrible options

Would be amazing if your kids get into Willow school (formerly called Lusher). About how much you looking to spend on housing? If not getting into a great charter school believe you are looking at roughly 10k year in tuition per kid
Buddy of mine is realtor. He recently showed me some nice places in a good areas of uptown but they were about 800k, that may be out of reach for most people

I didn’t characterize either as “terrible” for schools a professional might be able to get his kids into (magnet).

I worked at Tulane and lived in the Garden District but moved to the Northshore when buying a house and commuted.

FYI, even in the "nice" parts of the Garden District you regularly see lines of cars with smashed windows. Mine got hit twice.

Sure there are some decent areas in Orleans Parish but the risks outweigh the rewards IMO, especially if you have kids. You get much more bang for your buck elsewhere.
