Should I look for a house to buy in NOLA or in suburbs?

Possible job offer (Tulane university area). Would like to avoid long commute (more than 30 minutes). Me, wife, and 2 kids (ages 5 and a newborn).
Low crime area, decent elementary school district.

Thanks

Old Gretna is a great area with lots to do. No one really ever talks about it on here.

Metairie. Not in Orleans Parish.

Well your last sentence pretty much eliminates Orleans Parish. Look at Jefferson Parish.

Northshore if you're looking for decent public schools. Metairie Academy is a great elementary school but it's a magnet. Regular JP public schools suck.

I was told around Tulane (uptown, garden district) is not that bad.

Lakeview’s full, sorry. But it’s the place to be if you have a young family and want to be in OP.

Try Metairie north of West Esplanade and east of Bonnabel. Lots of teardowns in that area.

Have you factored in how much you will have to pay for private school for your 2 kids & which ones they can get into in your time period?

I occasionally work on the south shore. Causeway southbound isn't bad at all.

Coming back sucks out loud.

It’s not bad at all and if you’re a Tulane employee you’ll get your kids into Lusher/Willow with no problem.

But you have to live in Orleans Parish

The worst in Metairie is better than Nola’s “not that bad.”

Plus in Orleans, you’re dealing with NOPD which will respond to emergencies within a month or so, and S&WB that is so incompetent, even African countries would balk.

If you even have to ask if you should move to Orleans for anything resembling safety, you must be trolling.

It's a good area for single people in their 20s. I wouldn't feel comfortable raising a family in Orleans Parish.

Schools are terrible. Life is terrible. Crime is out of control. Bridge is horrendous. Taxes are incredibly high. Go elsewhere!

I don't really see New Orleans as having "suburbs" in the traditional sense.

For instance, Metairie almost feels more like a place next to New Orleans where the mall is, as opposed to like this super nice enclave out of the hustle-and-bustle of the main city.

I agree with the person who said Bucktown is a good spot. I'm not sure how many younger families are there, no idea, but it's safer and you're by the water too, which can be nice.
