It’s rarely a great idea to buy a home in a new city you have never lived. This doesn’t seem like a time to diverge from that. Renting for a little while to learn the area is almost always a better idea.

Harahan and river ridge is where you want to look. Harahan is one of the safest cities in Louisiana.

Raising a family in NO on 200k might be tough. I am a single guy making 120k and the idea of raising a family here on 200k does scare me (granted I am very conservative, maybe sometimes to a fault). When a family is involved it is hard to say no to Northshore or other surrounding suburbs. But I am not married and don’t have kids so my opinion really isn’t worth much.

When you say this, do you mean NOLA proper or the entire metro?

I can’t imagine the only families surviving in nice neighborhoods have to make north of $200k/year.

Try Metairie north of West Esplanade and east of Bonnabel. Lots of teardowns in that area.

Ya mean Bucktown….

I wouldn’t let some of these posts scare you. You will have some options that is your budget.

You’ll get shite on here for it, but i would strongly consider Arabi. You can have a very nice house still at this price point

Kind of far away from Tulane and you have to deal with bridges and trains

I live in Metry and when I needed to bring the kiddo to Tulane (she lives off campus now) I could get her to campus in 15-20mins via Earhart BLVD

It’s not bad at all and if you’re a Tulane employee you’ll get your kids into Lusher/Willow with no problem.

Lived near there for 5 years. It was great besides the 4 times my car was broken into. Only 2 busted windows…leave your car unlocked and let them go through it.

Back in mandeville now and miss a lot of stuff about the city, and don’t miss a lot of bullshite that goes on there.

Out of like 25,000 structures in St Bernard Parish at Katrina only 5 weren’t damaged in some way
