re: Should I look for a house to buy in NOLA or in suburbs?

Harahan/River Ridge would be my vote.
Safe of an area as you can get on the south shore. Easy drive to Tulane, Elmwood, MSY, Old Metairie, etc.
Don't have to worry about Orleans property taxes and leadership as well. Harahan also has its own police department if that hasn't been mentioned yet.

The price of private school in La has really price inflated.
You're preaching to the choir. tuition for us went up $1,000 from the prior school year. WTF are they providing next year that costs $1,000 more dollars per student than what they provided this year?

Glad we moved out of LA before having kids. It’s still a bit weird to me but I’m ok sending kids when we have them to the public schools in north GA. Being BR born it’s hard to shake the view of public school

Cant say I’ve found any in this price range. They all are like 15k.
The high schools are over 10k (somewhere between 11-13k) but the elementary/grammar schools are around 7-8k (other than Christian Brothers)

Check out the Oak Ridge Park neighborhood near Old Metairie, in between Metairie Rd. and the interstate. VERY convenient commute to the hospital. Houses on the north side of Metairie Rd. are more mid-range priced than those just across the street. Very appealing neighborhood - walkable, lots of shopping, great grocery stores, restaurants and bars in the neighborhood. Pontiff Playground is close. Not sure re: public schools, but decent private/Catholic schools nearby.
Grew up in Orleans parish, attended school there, and live there now. DO NOT move here. What TJG210 wrote is true re: services. If we did not already own our home, we’d relocate in a heartbeat. Orleans parish government will suck you dry, and the residents will break your heart one way or another.

It will be challenging, but you can get in Lakeview in that price range (by the hardest). It may not be your dream home, but it will be safe, have great access to anywhere in the city, and have good schools.

quote:I would consider this more of a private school than a typical New Orleans Catholic. Compare those numbers to Mt Carmel and Dominican for high school and St Catherine, St Francis, St Pius, St Dominic etc for grammar school.

I moved to New Orleans recently and am so confused about why people don’t just live in Metairie or other parts of Jefferson Parish. I’ll be moving over there ASAP. Before I moved here, I had no idea how Metairie is almost half the distance to downtown NOLA as West Mobile is to downtown Mobile. I thought it was a decent drive. It boggles my mind why people don’t live across the river or in Metairie if they can. It took me 5 seconds to realize how compact this entire area is. Everything is an easy Uber away. Do locals not realize Metairie is basically NOLA when looking at how spread out other cities are? Are people just stubborn?

quote:True dat! Our strongest impact is on the Gulf Coast, from TX coast thru Panhandle FL over to Jacksonville and down on the Gulf side to about Sarasota (collides and blends nicely with Miami/Cuban and Keys cultures).
Hard to find many other states that have this sort of impact on an entire region.

I would rather cut my dick off than live on the westbank

A good friend owns a Victorian two blocks from Loyola Law.
If you decide to try to buy near Tulane, check out cell phone signals. His cell phone coverage is ghastly, after all that the phone company promised them after Katrina.

Quite honestly, if you have kids, you shouldn’t live anywhere near New Orleans. Even the private schools are only great in comparison to the garbage public schools.
We moved from there to Nashville and the schools were night and day comparatively.

Why? It’s no more run down and ghetto than anywhere else in the area

You have to cross the CCC to get anywhere and it's nothing but half abandoned strip malls

Living in bucktown or east Metairie is effectively the same as Lakeview at 1/2 the yearly cost for tax/water/etc….they are literally a stones throw away, but one you’re likely paying an extra $10-15k/yr.
