What would've been a good choice of action in your opinion considering the taser didn't do shite to him and he was potentially reaching for his gat?
Pepper spray is the answer. Instead of tackling him, a blast of pepper spray to the eyes would have temporary blinded him. Then if he reaches for the gun, you drop him.
It's easy being a Monday morning QB. In the heat of the moment all sorts of crazy shite can happen, but I think the tackle, which probably could have been avoided, only added fuel to the fire.

I appreciate your comments and am glad to see you got lots of positive feedback. I started a thread similar to this Sunday evening and I invite you to read the original post linked below to see if you agree. You are right. The black community needs heroes, and Alton Sterling is not one.

I will read your old post. Thank You
As for the person who commented on how I feel the incident should have been handled, it would depend on Sterling's initial actions.
The video does not answer how the event got started. If he initially ran away from the cops, he would automatically be breaking the law. Granted, if he was actually reaching for a gun, then his death was unavoidable.
The very fact that he had an illegal gun and was not licensed for CC does not help the case either.
Above all else, no matter what, he should not have resisted arrest. This is the key fact that all the sympathizers overlook.

Dude, they tazed him two times and he was still fighting. Do you REALLY think pepper spray was worth risking at that point?
You people need to watch the videos, take a gun safety class, learn about how firearms work, talk to some real cops and hear their stories of what some of these thugs have pulled, and stop talking out of your asses.
I think there's a large portion of the population that is functionally retarded and only making it through life because someone is in charge of making sure man hole covers stay in place.

bullshite. I had to pepper spray someone resisting arrest and it didn't deter them one bit. The big fella still picked up a large object and came at me after being sprayed several times, once when he was lying prone on the ground after tripping and another time when he stopped running and squared up to fight me. It wasn't till after I drew my gun that he knew the wisdom of giving up to fight another day.
He eventually felt the effects of OC after he was cuffed, but it had no effect whatsoever on his willingness or ability to fight.

Maybe so, but it worked on this guy and he seemed a lot more belligerent than Sterling. After being sprayed the guy didn't even see the cop coming. He was taken down without issue.

You clearly have more experience in regard to this than I do, and you may be correct about it not working. OP asked for an alternative and I presented one.

And after the tazer failed to work, do you really think there were no other alternatives than to tackle, wrestle, and kill him?

So...it sounds like you're saying that it was their plan was to kill him after tackling and wrestling with him? I'm thinking their plan was to subdue and arrest him, but Sterling certainly didn't help that plan come to fruition. I guarantee that killing that man was not what those officers wanted to have to do in that situation.

That's not at all what I'm saying and I agree that it wasn't there plan to kill him. I'm just trying to use an open mind. As I said earlier, it's very easy to second guess and play Monday morning QB. This is a discussion board. I'm not trying to offend anyone, I'm just presenting other possibilities.

Usually I hate your posts. I like this one. I will go to church now as I need to repent due to the upcoming locust swarm.

The two videos we have seen do not show enough to answer every question that anybody could think of. I am guessing that there are more videos. Apparently there was a store security video, a video from the police car and who knows how many from other bystanders.
Any videos that exist would be in the hands of the Feds. Eyewitness testimony that we have not heard has been heard by the Feds. They are piecing it together and investigating it now.
At some point, we will all learn more about specifics and see the other videos. It is my opinion that the 2 LEO's will be exonerated. I think there will be an in-depth explanation given as to why they were exonerated.
I also think that those who have made their minds up already will be unreasonable and not want to hear or see any facts. Michael Brown set precedent for this.

Pepper spray only works on pussies.
This is just an example of how people can react to pepper spray, but when I was 14, 15 yrs old, give or take a year, I was with several of my cousins (all close in age). One of them came across my aunt's can of pepper spray and he asked "what is this" and one of my other cousins told him "its something you spray in your eyes to make it feel better. Try it" You could tell he was thinking about it, but instead he sprayed it in the eyes of the person who told him it was something to make your eyes feel better. His reaction was to go right towards the person who sprayed it and he was throwing punches.
They actually started fighting. Of course we all thought it was funny as hell because it backfired on the person who said "it makes your eyes feel better", but it wasn't until they stopped fighting that the dude with the spray in his eyes started rolling on the ground yelling about his eyes burning. In the situation with Sterling, there is no telling what he would have done if he was pepper sprayed. Pepper spray works for mail men who has a dog coming towards them, but not for someone who is fighting back at all cost.

The gun was still in his pocket. He did not pull it out.
I posted this in another thread, but if you watch the video and listen closely, the officer hollers "Blane, he's going for the gun!" just a split-second before the other officer shoots Sterling. The officer had control of Sterling's hand, but then he got it loose and reached down. And let's remember that this is after they tazed him twice and it had no effect on him.
Have you read about that 2009 incident he had where he suddenly went for his gun while an officer was trying to pat him down? I think this man was lucky to have lived as long as he did. It's sad, but he brought it on himself. Here is the 2009 incident info:
"In the report dated May 29, 2009, the officer said he was dispatched to a convenience store after getting a complaint about a subject "on the corner selling CDs" and that the subject had pulled a gun on someone.
According to the officer's report, when he arrived to the store, he spotted the suspect, who he later identified as Alton Sterling, carrying a crate of CDs.
The officer asked Sterling to put his hand on the hood of his police car and asked if Sterling had any weapons on him. The report says Sterling did "not answer" and as the officer continued to pat him down, Sterling started reaching for his pocket.
The officer went on to say in the report that Sterling suddenly spun around and the two began to struggle. The officer and Sterling hit the ground. The officer said he was able to call for backup as Sterling tried to push him off.
"While wrestling with this subject on the ground a black semi auto hand gun fell from this subject waist band at this time," the report states.
A deputy with the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office arrived as the officer was on the ground with Sterling. The two eventually were able to get Sterling into handcuffs. The report ends saying that "Sterling was then escorted to my unit where he continued to fight with officers."

By celebrating him, I think people are dismissing how crime and ill behavior are part of a vicious cycle destroying our communities.
I thought you had an excellent post with great thoughts. Although Southern is not my university, I felt the same way about the funeral being held in such a public place. It's a sad time for his family, but all these other people who didn't know this man (including those with other motives) were allowed to attend and act like they were grieving and remembering him when most were there for other purposes.
Jesse Jackson showed up adding fuel to the fire by referring to his death as a "crucifixion" and that kind of BS speech is one more thing that could contribute to tipping a mentally unstable person over the edge to act on something in their head. That kind of speech is just not good for overall relations between people. But Jesse thrives off of that and people just allow him to speak anyway.
The truth is that Sterling was a scary individual who had numerous incidents of violence. He also had numerous incidents of threatening and antagonizing police. But that has not been the narrative that has dominated the news.

Still not down with struggle, are you? C'mon man. What's wrong with you?
Alton Sterling was shot for selling CDs while black. At least, that's what all the BLM folks tell me. They also tell me that could have been you. You sold any bootleg CDs lately?
Look, I don't think any of us can make sense of what's happening, and sadly there's probably not a BLM marcher who can explain it.
I agree with you, though. If you want a martyr to be the face of your movement, a gun-toting felon who got shot while fighting with police is the WORST type of person to rally around.
What's truly sad is I doubt very many of them have ever read or heard any of MLK's speeches. He'd be appalled at what's going on - as would Medgar Evers, another true martyr in the cause of civil rights.
