Short Rant: Alton Sterling Unjustified Appraisal

I have to vent some of the this frustration. First off, I dont agree with my university hosting the Alton Sterling funeral. I understand that the event is tragic, but I still see Sterling as a misguided adult. He may not have deserved to be shot down, but he should not be applauded as a martyr. He was a troublemaker who should have been punished in an appropriate legal manner.
By celebrating him, I think people are dismissing how crime and ill behavior are part of a vicious cycle destroying our communities.
Why is it that our fellow citizens feel that someone who commits crimes should be more celebrated than people (especially minorities) who actually contribute to society and try to behave in a morally and legally responsible way
Ill end it by saying this. IF by chance their is a Sterling day ( and I honestly hope our nation does not stoop to that level) I for one will not support it.
People like Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders deserve celebration. This man's family has needs our prayers and emotional support and that is a far as it needs to go.
ETA: Probably get down-votes for this, but I don't care.
And I still support SU, I just don't fully understand their reasons

This will likely be your most upvoted post.

What would've been a good choice of action in your opinion considering the taser didn't do shite to him and he was potentially reaching for his gat?

the idea that we have to more celebrate minorities behaving and living civilly is pretty damning to the culture and reality of where we are at.

It's almost as if this never happened. You would think this question would be posed on the reg. Really doesn't matter because the idiots supporting him don't care about the truth.

I thought he was getting his kool-aid or diabetes medication?

I'll never celebrate a person's death but the way people ignore the situation I just don't get it. Someone called the cops on the guy for brandishing a gun, the cops come, he resists and fights with them, then gets shot. That isn't an unexpected result if you are being honest.
Now if the cops just started harassing the guy for selling cds and this shite went down I would understand more of the outrage.
I've even heard people who think Sterling did nothing wrong at all. Just surreal. He was a human being with friends and family just like me but he had a hand in his own death. If you don't see that then you are blind IMO.

Southern is backwards in so many ways. I am an alum and will never set foot on the campus nor will I donate anything.

He was not an adult at all. I mean by the maturity aspect, not age. Misguided? No, he was just an immature idiot like all criminals.

Based on the facts I've read, he did deserve it.

That is a question for blacks like yourself. It's truly odd behavior how criminals in the hood are celebrated for being killed. The mommas and baby mommas wear it like a badge of honor. Death by cop is really celebrated. Death by fellow black criminal not as much, but still celebrated. Why is that?

I would agree that we should not make martyrs and heroes out of violent criminals. Yes, the shooting was probably unjustified. But, that man is no hero.

I'm concerned about your language here. "Shot down" - either you believe the story that he was armed or not. Either you believe that he was fighting with the police and had the potential to get his gun at any moment or not. He was not "shot down" - whether or not we feel the police were justified at every step, they responded to a call about a man (Alton Sterling) brandishing a gun and threatening a homeless person.
Now, did he do that? We don't know and he certainly didn't deserve to just be executed for that offense, even if proven. But what actually did happen? He's there, armed (there is no question about that), with a felony record. The cops show up to investigate this charge.
They were not "hunting black men." So, they roll up and does Sterling cooperate? No. Why? Because he's a convicted felon with a gun and he knows he's going to jail. On top of the fact he's very likely selling weed with a side of CDs.
Play stupid arse games, win stupid arse prizes.

I get this and completely agree. Setting aside the War on Drugs(tm) - FTR, I don't agree with something like MJ being illegal, anyway - he had an incident in 2009 that was an eerie parallel. He was armed then, and also fought the cops, although they did not shoot him during that incident.

You know who else you should celebrate, my brother? BRPD Officer Montrell Jackson. And Gerald and Garafola. Why? Because without a robust law enforcement agency, North Baton Rouge might as well be Mogadishu.
That's the God's honest truth.
