probably because it would cost more than what they are losing

My uncle owns some Piggly Wigglys in Alabama. He definitely intervenes. Last month he could tell a guy was putting steaks up his shirt. When the thief started running, my uncle got to the front door and locked it so he couldn't escape. The guy got form tackled and had a boot on his chest until the cops showed up. Margins are too small to put up with the rampant thievery in Greene County, AL

For a store open 7AM - 10 PM (13 hours), it would cost them $169 a day(Google says security guards make on average $13/hour).

That's about $61k a year for 1 security guard. Much more than they take out in theft losses.

Because someone would eventually give him a chair.

Same thing happens all day everyday at Academy. People walk in and fill their arms up with clothes and then just walk right out to the car waiting on them at the front.

Watched the Sheriff dept. make a guy open a big box containing a grill. It was full of clothes, shoes and boxes of Titleist Pro-Vs.

Might also have overtime pay and benefits at a place like Whole Foods, or if your are contracting it out it will probably be double the $13/hour the actual guard takes home

TLDR: security probably would cost $100k a year for one guy at the entrance

Every retail business has a no-intervention policy. This is nothing new. The losses from stolen inventory are nothing compared to a potential lawsuit or PR hit that would result from someone stopping a thief who would then in return cry racism and media outrage ensues. Best to just let them off with the stolen inventory.

My area must not have gotten the memo. I see 3-5 shoplifting arrests in the local daily police report. Wal-Mart, Dollar General, and Kohls seem to be the most popular place to get arrested for shoplifting.

Yep, mine was a very low end estimate. It would be costly and much more than what they lose in theft.

They need to just have a cop there...it's honestly not that expensive compared to the cost of losing a ton of product.

Publix on main street in Gainesville usually has a cop on premises at all time because of the high amount of poor and homeless in the area. Guarantee their loss prevention numbers are amazing compared to the Wal Mart near it on Waldo.

under $500 the police aren't going to do shite to investigate. It's a waste of time to call them.

I'd take that bet.

Walmart has staff in a room near the front of each store staring at monitors fed by each camera in the store. They can track anyone they want through the entire store then apprehend whenever they want. They have detention rooms where they hold you and wait until the cops come.

Saturday's Police Report

A West Main Walmart employee said a man entered the store around 7 a.m. and bought a chicken biscuit. He then walked around for about an hour. At one point, he picked up a $3 Red Bull, opened the can and started to drink. When the employee asked him to pay for it, he said he didn't have any money. He was detained for police and charged with shoplifting.

A West Main Walmart employee said a man was detained around 3:30 p.m. after he tried to steal porterhouse steaks, a T-bone steak and a Miller High Life beer, worth a total of $37. After arresting the 41-year-old man, police discovered he also had a felony arrest warrant.

I think most high volume stores probably could save some money if they had security but:

-you still won’t stop everything
-the risk of lawsuits, bad PR and just the overall disruption that is wrestling some person to the ground at the front of your store still makes it not worth it for a lot of places.

Like it or not, Whole Foods wants a certain atmosphere in their stores and having physical confrontations at the front of the store, cops arresting people, etc makes for an unpleasant experience for their customers. The local IGA probably doesn’t have these same concerns

When I was a bagger at Delchamps in the early 80s, part of our job was running down shoplifters. The best part.

I think you may have just come across an employee that doesnt understand the policy.

100 dollars at Whole Foods is like ONE bag of groceries

Asking my brother about Wal Mart policy. He runs the Houma store.
