So the guy can bring his buddy and tell him to stay in that room until he starts shooting. Once all the kids run into that room just slaughter them while they're trapped in the room. Ok buddy.

Do we know if he bought that gun or obtained it illegally?

Makes a major difference

There has to be a true underlining cause for why this is happening more at US schools than our other 1st world country counterparts

Is it guns?

Mental health?

something else?

there has to be a reason/reasons

However, we havent even actually tried to figure it out, which is maddening really

There is no good solution to this, it’s sad. I’ve thought about it a lot and almost every time I come up with a solution there’s a way these assholes can use it against you. Idk what can be done, but something has to.

I'm interested in hearing what type of gun was used in this tragedy. As a Republican who does own guns I am in favor of banning military style weapons from the public. This has really become a major epidemic in our society and doing nothing clearly isn't the answer anymore.

You should assume you’re being monitored in any government building - including public schools.

Our society treats mental illness so casually, when in reality it's the cause of a shitload of our issues.

Awareness/screening/treatment across the board could only help.

The fact that I jumped in the thread at this point and I see even a few post like this is slightly encouraging.

And yes, a focus on increased resources and more attention and empathy from the general public in regards to mental health care would make for a much more content and less dead society in general. Oh and the prison population would decrease as well.

What we'll probably wind up with eventually though is the mentally ill being discriminated against even more harshly.

You have no idea how the weapon was obtained.

Nor do I.

Don’t act like you do.

What will you say when a teacher accidentally shoots a kid?

Or a run of the mill fight escalates to deadly force

Arming teachers is not the answer. But countermeasure technology could be

The doors could be controlled remotely and lock down once a known incident is occurring.

That eliminates the room to room activities.

You arent just going to get rid of guns without a lot more casualties as many people believe it is our last line of defense against the govt going full tilt power mode.

I mean, not really

And to be honest, this seems like a far lazier generalization than anything else in this thread.

A severe increase in mental health awareness/treatment would get us a lot farther than anything else, and it would solve a lot more problems than just this, IMO.

The problem is that someone has to know and care that a person has a mental illness. If it’s true that this kid had major red flags on his social media, either his parents - and every other adult around him - didn’t know or didn’t care.

bullet proof doors that can be deadbolt locked... anybody?

How is that going to help when the shooter pulled the fire alarm prior to shooting.

As I said earlier, this is why nothing gets done after these events. Anyone can think of a specific situation where the proposed change would be useless, so everyone eventually decides to do nothing.

There is no one size fits all answer, but the status quo is a joke.

This is an overreaction. Do you really want every single teacher with a gun? I hope the ones who are fricking their students don't put it in a place where the student doesn't steal it.

I am all for people having guns, but I don't like the idea everyone having guns on them.. How emotionally educated to you think the average person is? You have that many people in one area with guns, there will be emotional reactions in which someone is going to go to the gun. You have to be realistic.

As a teacher there are different points throughout the day where the if someone chose to hurt others there is not much drills and training can do. All you can do is try to minimize the casualties.

When you have 700 plus kids in one area you hope you can spot it before it starts.
