That's kind of what I'm talking about, though.

Our society treats mental illness so casually, when in reality it's the cause of a shitload of our issues.

Awareness/screening/treatment across the board could only help.

It would be nice if we could catch mental illness like this before events happen but in the interim, this guy should be slowly burned at the stake.

These stories the kids are telling during interviews are really gut wrenching.

All school doors should have a dead bolt locking system. But one that is a bit more sophisticated that when engaged and locked, it sets off a school wide alarm. Similar to breaking the glass on fire extinguishers and so forth.

yeah we should give a bunch of old ladies and fresh college graduate women handguns and expect them to defend people from maniacs intent to kill.

that's definitely the solution.

Yea, we should not give them anything and let them swing a purse at the maniacs with intent to mass murder.

That's definitely the solution.

Probably better than arming them.

How is that going to help when the shooter pulled the fire alarm prior to shooting.

A manually operated deadbolt and brace to prevent the classroom doors from being kicked in would be a start.

Camera systems throughout the school with remote access from law enforcement would help as well

or just...not make it super fricking easy for anyone over the age of 18 to buy extremely powerful weapons made for killing humans.

A severe increase in mental health awareness/treatment would get us a lot farther than anything else, and it would solve a lot more problems than just this, IMO.

I feel like the left talks about gun control, and the right talks about mental health.

Here’s my thought: why don’t we do both? Kids are dying. We need to do everything we can to make sure this doesn’t happen ever again.

they need to have a "false fire alarm aka active shooter button" we can counter with.

so true both are the go-to arguments

the left is just wrong and the right is just lazy by throwing out such a generalization. mental health is extremely hard to diagnose and treat since people silently suffer most of the time. what do you want to do, make everyone take mandatory psych checks (which could easily be fooled)? it's silly
