again, i've never said "ban guns"... not sure why this keeps getting assumed...
Because for the policies you imagine to be effective, some kind of ban will be required.

cool... and i'd assume most gun enthusiasts would feel the same way, honestly...
No, certainly not the better educated ones. The ones that know the difference between a right and a privilege.

semi-automatics, whatever, should be EXTREMELY regulated, so it's not as easy to end up in 17 year olds hands? maybe a serial number for each gun, registered specifically to that individual, and if that gun is stolen or lost, it's the owner's responsibility to report it or face the consequence of being responsible if that gun is used in some sort of gun violence? i say that because obviously a gun can be bought legally, then resold to someone illegally... so transfer the registration to the new owner, or report it lost or stolen, or assume responsibility of the gun regardless...
You've basically just proved you are a complete moron when it comes to a basic understanding of CURRENT FEDERAL LAWS. Go do a few days of research, you are just embarrassing yourself.

Nah. They're may not be as many, but if you Wiki Mass shootings in the US, there were quite a few with random shooting before Columbine.
You can go down the list of school shootings on Wikipedia. There are plenty, but I'm having trouble finding any that are A) by students of the school and B) targeted random people. Pearl, MS might be the only one.

SANTA FE, Texas – At least 9 people died Friday morning in gunfire at Santa Fe High School, law enforcement officials confirmed, while area hospitals reported at least a dozen others were injured.
Police arrested a student suspect and detained a second person, Santa Fe school officials confirmed.
The dead are expected to include students and staff, according to a senior law enforcement official who was not authorized to speak about the investigation.
TEXAS SCHOOL SHOOTING: What we know, what we don't know
The attacker was armed with an AR-15-style rifle, a pistol, a shotgun and pipe bombs, the official said.
"Officers inside encountered a bloody mess in the school," the source said, adding, "Evidently this guy threw pipe bombs all in there. We don't know if any of them went off."

UPDATE 12:10 p.m.: The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston clarified that it is treating three people: a male under 18 with a gunshot wound to the leg; a middle-aged woman who has a leg wound and is out of surgery, and a man in his 50s with a gunshot to the upper arm, near the chest, who is in surgery and in critical condition, according to David Marshall, chief nursing officer.
The latter is a school security officer who had recently retired as a Houston police detective, according to Joe Gamaldi, who heads the Houston Police Officer's Union.

Confirmed by law enforcement that suspect is 17 year old Dimitrios Pagourtzis.
This frustrates me that these shooters get to rob other lives and yet survive.

n Texas, 17-year-olds have faced the same sentencing options as adults convicted of capital murder: the death penalty and life without parole. In 2005, the Supreme Court prohibited the death penalty for anyone younger than 18, deciding that the less-developed brains of juveniles render them less culpable for their behavior. That left only the possibility of life without parole as punishment for 17-year-olds found guilty of capital crimes.
I guess the death penalty is not possible?

What if sentencing is when he's 18 or 19?

Hopefully the politics in this thread goes to the PT board and this thread can be more about the actual event.

It amazes me the amount of people hoping and wanting stuff to fall on one side of the political spectrum

So the shooter is white......again
Have the "he's mentally ill" excuses started pouring in yet? I don't want to miss it this time

I prefer when the suspect is captured alive. Allows our system to work and give an official sense of justice. Let his victims’ families face him. Put him on trial and sentence him to death properly. Killing him in a shootout isn’t as satisfying to me.

No matter what, he will never be released into society again. Not as good as lethal injection, but still the same result.

Well he clearly is. Mentally healthy people don't shoot up schools.

The Thurston High School shooting took place on May 21, 1998. Expelled student Kip Kinkel first murdered his parents before engaging in a school shooting at Thurston High School in Springfield, Oregon that left two students, Ben Walker and Mikael Nickolauson, dead and 25 others wounded.[1] Kinkel is currently serving a 111-year sentence without the possibility of parole.
If you have an hour, Frontline did a great documentary of how Kip Kinkel came to be the way he was. He had an intact family. Both parents were well respected teachers, and his older sister was a high achiever, who went on to be a college cheerleader. Kip never felt he measured up to expectations, and when signs of mental illness began appearing, neither his parents, his therapist, nor the school dealt with it properly. He spiraled further down until he eventually snapped. LINK

I wish it didn't take forever though. In these cases, let the family face him then as soon as he is convicted, carry out the sentence. Don't waste taxpayer dollars for the next 25 years.
