Only plant baws will understand this. If you’re sick on Christmas, you bring your bitch arse to work sick!! Good work ethic is lost on a lot of people.

Similar situation. Scheduled off for Xmas. Have worked everyday for the past nine days. Guy who’s leaving the company for another job decided to make his last day today, Xmas eve. Guess who gets scheduled for Xmas. What a POS. Needless to say my wife was not too pleased.

Man, I was the bad guy ~22 years ago. Started getting chills Christmas eve morning. That led to puking and 103 fever later in the day. I had to personally call the guy that had to replace me. He refused to speak to me for over a month.

You could have said you are sick yourself. They were smart.

On call means you come in hell or high water, or you don't stay on call.

That said, to hell with being on call.

You can shite on the company, but don’t shite on your co-workers.

If you ever take off for Christmas, you get the hell out of town, or at least that’s your story. Can’t come in if you’re in another state. That’s shift/hourly 101.

And don't answer your phone, this ain't hard.

We got options baw:

Become this persons friend. Listen to them talk about plans. Find out their on call schedule. Then wait…wait a year, two, or three and then ruin their happy little plans by calling in and forcing them to come in.

If you’re ever on the same shift with this person find out about when they are planning vacation and if your able to choose before them take that spot from them. Get another guy or two to help block off that entire week or so with their vacation too. Then, when it’s time for your day of vacation, show up to work and say you didn’t need it.

If you are on call and required to come in no matter what, you aren’t really scheduled off for Christmas and should likely be paid something for remaining available to work, even if you don’t have to go in…I’m sure this isn’t how it works in many plants.

if you'd have serviced him properly on the last shift change I can guarantee you'd have been off on Christmas

You bid on that job, part of the risk staying on shift.

Presented by healthcare workers, paramedics, police, and many other shift workers who don't have the option of closing on Christmas Day.

I have the flu and am not calling in sick. Working today and tomorrow.

Doctors don’t typically take sick days, though.

Thx for ruining my 1st scheduled Christmas off in 8 years. I hope all of your presents are stolen tonight and you get fired when your Christmas illness subsides.

No, I’m essentially asking why the OP is the worker who has to cover the shift. Could be numerous reasons.

Our shift guys have a gentleman’s agreement that they work their scheduled holidays.
