500 applications? Lol. When I was hired by a chemical plant back in May, there were 3100 applications. Shell is a premium job. I promise there will be more than 500 apps. Valero TESTED 4000 people last year when I applied.

When I hired on there were 1700 applicants and 25 were hired. About 800 were invited to test and 125 made it to the interviews. There's about 20 operators on my shift and 3-4 have 4 yr college degrees and about that many have the 2 yr PTECH. At times it can be physically challenging but mostly it's mental. Knowing what to do when the shite hits the fan is something that comes with experience and knowledge, and there's a lot to learn here. Overall it's a good job and I enjoy it.

Just to give some clarification on hours worked:
I am an operator working the EEWO shift.
Now every plant is different but here is an example of mine.
I have a 28 day rotation in a month. I work 14 days out a month 12 hour shifts rotating days and nights.
The way our pay periods work is I will have 168 hours a month if I don't pick up any OT shifts.
168 x 12 = 2,016 hours worked in a year
YTD I have picked up an additional 200 hours of OT. So roughly 2,216 hours worked this year.
Some guys work 700hrs some 50hrs just depends on the person.
Versus a normal 5 day 40 hr a week = 200hrs/month
= 2,400 hours a year
So even picking up an additional 200 hrs OT I still work less than a normal 9-5er.
I understand this doesn't take into account vacation and PTO and holidays.
This is just a rough example of how my particular plant schedule works.
I could never work a 9-5 job. I love being off during the week to fish, hunt, and play golf. I do miss a lot of different events with friends and family, but that's the sacrifice I have chosen to provide for my family.
Your math is WAY off.
You have 13 28 day rotations in a year, not the 12 you are using for end of year work hours.
A 40 hour work week over 4 weeks is only 160 hours, not the 200 you are using.
168 hours over 4 weeks times 13 periods per year (52 weeks) equals 2184 hours.
40 hours per week for 4 weeks is 160 hours. 13 periods (52 weeks) equals 2080 hours.
A 4 team round the clock workforce will work over 100 more hours per year than a conventional 8-5 M-F 40/week work schedule.

People, plant workers are not trashy. Well, not all of them.
Working in a plant, one can make a good living. It is all up to the person and what they do with the money they make. One can work in a plant and after 30 years, retire very comfortable. Planning and saving for retirement is the trick. A lot of guys I worked with are still working even after 30 years. Why? Because they still want to. Simply as that.
Now the young guys bragging about making 6 figures, those are the ones that will let mad money go to there heads and will be broke down the line. They will end up back on the streets within 10 years due to a drinking/drug problem.
I saw it happen and saw them loose everything, including there families.

Yea, I'm sure is wife loves spending that money too since all he does is work! Good for him.

old me, "Man I'm going to make 6 figures and I didn't waste my time in college like you." I know that most operators make 6 figures
Sounds like the kind of guy that will have a huge mortgage note. He will be so leveraged, one little hiccup and his world is turned upside down.

And when he is 40 he'll look 60 because shift work is not easy on the body.

Cut the cord and drop the friend. If you aren't willing to do that, then it's your own fault if he makes you feel like shite about things.
Ultimately though, get better friends. You should have the kind of people in your life that you will be genuinely happy for when an opportunity comes around regardless of whether they will make more than you.

I hear it all the time.
My dad has been an operator for 30 years and I know what he makes.
You can take this to the bank:
1) Most young operators overstate what they make.
2) No first year operator in any plant is clearing 100k without a metric frickton of overtime.
3) Most people who call themselves operators are actually just loaders.

I've grown up around chem plant personnel, I've lived in Ascension my entire life. I've been working in chem plants in one capacity or another for 8 years and have never heard one person brag about what they make.
Another dumb stereotype perpetuated by the OT.

I've worked a 4 week rotation over several different schedules through the years, so I've crunched the numbers several times. Shift work isn't bad, if you get the right schedule, but you always get some built in overtime, so more money. But you have to get over the 40/week to get to it.

Yeah but generally you have a 36 hour week to balance it.

Not arguing that, just that you get OT on 2 of 4 weeks on most schedules. The 36 hour week is all straight, so your 48 hour week with 8 OT hours more than makes up for the hours/dollars you're short on the 36 hour week.

Where can I sign up ???
These jobs aren't easy to get whether it's a small facility or Dow and Exxon. You can apply on individual websites or contact La Workforce.
It's not all gravy. Shift Work and 50-60 hr work weeks(IF YOU WANT TO) but the average is pushing 80-100k for these salaries and well over that for them Overtime Junkies(volunteer for call-outs on their off days and stay 16 hrs instead of 12 on shifts).
