He was great in "Gomer Pyle USMC" too, and so was Frank Sutton (RIP) as the long-suffering "Sergeant Carter."

Gomer Pyle is with his girlfriend Bunny and he says "Bunny, can I put my finger in your belly button?"
She answers "Why Gomer, how forward. But I guess so".
A few minutes pass by and Bunny says in a surprised tone "Why Gomer, that isn’t my belly button!!"
Gomer answers exuberently "Surprise surprise surprise that ain’t my finger neither!"
I hopped in here to tell that same joke. At one time, I knew a ton of Gomer and Miss Bunny jokes.

Never understood those, either. Bunny was Sgt Carter's girlfriend. Gomer's was Lou Ann Poovey.
With that said....in a B&W episode before she was "Bunny" the actress Barbara Stuart played a pretty, but hot-tempered waitress at a bar and was referred to as "the dragon lady." When guys would get fresh, she'd deck them, etc. Carter and the gang tried to play a trick on Gomer to call her the Dragon Lady. She figured out what they were up to and gave Gomer a big smooch.

In the opening credits, he's marching in formation with other Marines. He said in an interview that those were real Marines, most of them went to Vietnam, and a lot of them were killed.

Well, I'm sorry to see him go. Yet another personality from my childhood passing on. It's a bummer.

Wow, that's really sad. Those poor fellows. I have often wondered over the years if they were real Marines or actors. They definitely always looked like real Marines to me. I found that show to be very accurate when it came to the regulation haircuts, uniforms, etc. for the time. As great a movie that "The Godfather" is, one thing that really bugs me every time I see it is that Michael Corleone's hair is way too long and thick when he's at his sister's wedding at the opening of the film. He's still wearing his Marine Corps "Alpha" uniform which indicates he just got out or is getting released from duty. His hair should be much shorter in that scene.
