It’s always been in their contracts. Those erotic thrillers from the 90s and early-00s looked so believable because of masterful editing and well-placed camera shots. The actors and actresses weren’t actually having sex.

That only happens in independent arthouse films with non-SAG actors and actresses
Practically all A-list Hollywood actresses and actors are SAG-unionized so they can’t do it

There are a few that allegedly were having sex during the filmed sex scenes. Billy Bob with Halle Berry in Monster's Ball. Mickey Rourke and a starlet (Carrie Otis?) in a sorta sequel to 9 and a half weeks. A rather ugly director (Vincent Gallo?) somehow convinced Chloe Sevigne to blow him on camera.
I dunno about Selena Gomez going that route but many actresses start doing more nudity to attract attention when their careers start to ebb.
