Or just be annoyed by the rent-a-cops that drive them....

The decision to end Segway production came on the heels of a drop in the company's sales to less than 1.5% of its 2019 revenue.

When it was first introduced, the sleek design of the scooter felt to some like the coming of a new age of public transport. Its futuristic technology allowed riders to control motion with nothing but a shift in weight.

The newly-conceived vehicle even generated a new niche tourist industry — segway tours — and the vehicle's swift pace and sharp movements took to Hollywood in the film "Mall Cop," wherein Paul Blart (Kevin James) zoomed to and fro with the help of his precious scooter.

Sales have collapsed for 2020.

quote:

Detractors of the Segway didn't have long to wait before the vehicle was decried as unsafe, since its self-balancing feature was often difficult to control, causing scooters to spin wildly out of control and throw vulnerable riders to the ground, nonplussed. Consequently, some cities banned Segways.

The company was later absorbed by British self-made millionaire Jimi Heselden. But in 2009 — a mere 10 months after the acquisition — 62-year-old Heselden fell to his death from a 9-meter (30-foot) cliff while riding a Segway to his estate in Thorp Arch close to Boston Spa, West Yorkshire, according to Unilad.

quote:

Years later, Usain Bolt had a Segway accident when a cameraman riding another scooter crashed into him mid-victor-lap after winning the 200-meter (656-foot) Beijing race in 2015. Thankfully, Bolt didn't die and wasn't injured, and he joked about it later.

This is a bad year for cops. Police departments bought most of those things.

Never understood why they didn't take off more. Seems like a very efficient mode of transportation. Guess they were too expensive.

I wish they would've replaced golf carts at the course.

I remember the hype from the inventor who said this contraption would change travel and everyone would have to have one to get around

Expensive, learning curve to use, finding someone to perform maintenance...myriad of issues.

Ineffective marketing. Where did they market their product? Did they ever run a TV or radio ad? Were they ever advertised in magazines?

For close to a year this was referred to as “It”, a product so revolutionary our life would never be the same. It was compared to the dawn of the automobile or the airplane. When the spy shot sketch was first shown on Drudge Report, I laughed.

Ninebot scooters, made by a Chinese company (aka communist controlled) basically stole Segway’s tech, reproduced the product (Ninebot), and then priced them into oblivion. Segway’s sales plummeted and their value as a company tanked. Ninebot then used their profits from their IP theft based product to purchase Segway and...poof, no more lawsuit (why continue a suit against yourself).
When Ninebot sales are included, that total number for sales obviously climbs. In short, the total produced was roughly 10-15,000 units per year. Those are solid numbers given the product imho. As with all tech, however, new tech eventually makes the old stuff obsolete.

TLDR - Chinese IP theft killed another US company. frick China!
