Ya we should totally blame the american citizen that got a back ground check and legally purchased a handgun instead of the person that broke in and stole it.......

What do you describe as responsible actions necessary to secure a handgun in one owns vehicle?

Only a dumbass leaves a weapon in a vehicle and considers that secure.

Sharia law specifically calls for the cutting off of the hand of a thief, so it's not really a stretch.

It's not an either/or game. Yes, absolutely, the criminal should be held responsible for his criminal act.

But the owner should also be ostracized for being an idiot and leaving a gun inside a vehicle. That's so beyond a stupid thing to do... it's amazes me that anyone would defend the owner. The owner is an idiot.

Should the owner be thrown in jail or held responsible? No. But should he be considered an idiot and feel guilty if that gun is used in a crime? Absolutely. A simple act of securing the gun would have prevented this. Also, not breaking into the car would have prevented this. Both are guilty.

My gun stays in my truck at times because it's illegal to carry it in with me at work.

So there's that

That's understandable. In this case, the individual was at home.

There are numerous places where it is illegal for a ccl holder to carry their weapon, what do you suggest they do with if when they arrive at one of those places?

i thought it was clear from the OP that we were talking about leaving a gun in your vehicle when you are at your house.

When one is at a place that does not allow weapons, the only option is to securely lock it in your car, out of visible sight.

So I assume you feel the same way if a gun is stolen from a home? pawn shop? gun store? How is a gun locked in a vehicle not secured? If I have to go into the post office or the DMV and leave my gun secured in my truck and a thief breaks into my vehicle and steals it, then commits another crime using my gun it's my fault?

Do you realize how stupid your argument is?

Is it best practice? No. Is the owner culpable for doing nothing at all wrong other than assuming that no one will break into a locked vehicle to steal something on private property? No. SO how the frick is he in any way culpable or liable for a no good thief being a no good thief?

I keep a gun locked and out of sight in my car so that if I end up in questionable situations I have access to protection.

I have the same arrangement in my home. If someone breaks into my home when I'm gone at work all day, am I being negligent for having a firearm that someone who has broken into my locked home now has access too?

I don't have a concealed carry so unless I wear my gun on the hip for all the world to see I can't legally carry it anywhere with me.

Blaming gun owners for negligence or stupidity in the instance someone breaks into their locked car and steals their personal defense weapon is absurd. It's tantamount to blaming the purse owner for getting her purse stolen off her arm with a gun in it.

I don't feel tremendously comfortable leaving my gun in my car on account that, yes, someone can break in and have access to it. The same way I feel about leaving it pretty much anywhere. But that's a risk I am willing to endure so as to afford myself access to protection when in my vehicle or traveling somewhere away from home. I feel zero responsibility if someone steals that gun and uses it in a crime. What I do think is that anyone who uses a firearm in a crime should have strictly enforced and extremely stiff sentences.

and "secure" does not mean "leave in an unattended vehicle." Dumbass acquaintance got his truck broken in overnight

When you say "broken into" was the vehicle locked with an alarm and the gun out of sight?

I don't blame them more than the thief, of course.

But if you want to purchase things designed to kill (and I do), you are putting extra obligations on yourself to act in a responsible manner.

Leaving a handgun in a vehicle with any regularity is not responsible and is widely deemed such by responsible gun owners.

Cars are broken into at a rate much higher than homes. I think it's dumb to leave any valuables in your car. It's particularly stupid to leave firearms in a vehicle.

Homes in dangerous, crime ridden neighborhoods are probably more likely to be broken into than in non-dangerous neighborhoods, so should people in the dangerous neighborhoods not leave guns in their homes then? Sometimes the issue is not quite as simple as that.

Personally I don't like leaving valuable property in my vehicle but it's often pretty unavoidable unless you are content simply not to take it with you at all.

Yep. If you leave it in the vehicle, you don't care for it too much.

I do my best to secure my weapons in my home, as I'm sure most responsible gun owners do. I think you should do everything within reason to keep your weapons from falling into the hands of the wrong people. That will vary based on the person and the situation.

But not leaving a firearm in a car is a very simple thing to do in most circumstances. If you're CCing and you've got to go into a campus building or a government office, you do what you can. But that's different than the philosophy of having a full time "truck gun" that you see on this board. It's crazy how "normal" that is on here compared to how frowned upon it is by the gun rights crowd in general.

Exactly my point. Not every situation is the same. Sometimes one is going to find it necessary to leave a gun in their vehicle and will have to make a calculated risk in doing so or simply not have a gun with them in the vehicle at all. That's an imprecise decision to make.

It doesn't necessarily make someone either stupid or negligent.

It's not irresponsible to leave your own weapons in your locked vehicle.
