If a gun is for protection, what good is it if it's in your vehicle parked at your house?

New trucks should come with a built in safe to store a pistol or other items you want to keep safe.

I had one stolen out of my locked truck a few years back.

I would have taken it with me but the law didn't allow me to legally carry it away from the vehicle without a license.

Change those stupid laws and you can prevent more of this.

Post an ad on Craigslist asking for it back. Offer a reward

If the weapon is in your home, is that considered "secure" to you?

you better make sure he reports it stolen, I had that happen when my house was broken into 5 or 6 years ago and did not. I had a home visit from the ATF last year that made me pee my pants when they knocked. It ended up being my gun was used in a shooting in mexico and they had some questions but obviously when my alibis to not being the shooter matched up I was left alone. Still that gut wrenching feeling when you get a knock at your door from the ATF is one I never want to feel again

I had the FBI knocking on my door on a Saturday afternoon when all my neighbors were outside. Turns out a friend needed a background check for some federal work and used me as a reference. Makes your arse draw up not to mention Gladys Kravitz next door giving me the stink eye.

Exactly the information they tell you they do not keep. The fedgov has a list. Sure, the FLL is required to keep it, but don't be naive, fedgov keeps it too.

No they don't. To trace the owner of a firearm the law enforcement agency has to go to the manufacturer with the serial number and start with what wholeseller bought the lot of guns with that number, or possibly the end seller FFL if they bought direct from the manufacturer. They then go to the FFL that sold the firearm to the individual who has to search his records to find the buyer. No serial number information ins given during a NICS background check. One of my siblings was a Assistant District Attorney who would have given anything for a database where a firearm could be instantly traced.

Good idea. It could be on the passenger side of the dash, have a keyed lock to get in it, and also store your gloves.

Anyone ever actually have gloves in their glove box?

Leaving weapons in a vehicle is stupid, regardless of your neighborhood.

100% and this is about the only pro-gun, largely conservative board on the internet where a lot of people think otherwise. It's bizarre.

What do you describe as responsible actions necessary to secure a handgun in one owns vehicle?

Take the weapon with you, particularly if the vehicle is being left overnight. I don't think that's too onerous to ask.

But why would you keep it in your car? Is it not better to have 2 guns available at home than 1? 4 instead of 3? Etc?

I missed the part where I said anything about Sharia law.

Nice stretch.
