Tough call. Boots are critical to skiing well, and you'll definitely enjoy it more with good boots, fitted by an expert (don't buy over the internet, or even off the shelf in a box store -- find a real fitter on one of your trips and work with them).
On the other hand, it's a pile of money for something you use that infrequently.
For me it would be a no-brainer; I'd find some way to rationalize and justify the expense. I therefore recommend you ski more, and that makes the boot purchase essential, and you don't have wonder if it's a good decision.

as an older and wiser OT'er, I go to the slopes to sit on the deck at the chalet with a cocktail and watch you douche bags run over each other and break your legs.

Thanks for the downvote whomever you are (not to Scruffy).
If the not-so-experienced skier follows the other rules about not stopping or taking annoyingly giant turns, esp without looking, then it shouldn't be an issue.
If mean I agree it would annoy me to have people in over their heads in front of me.
But to improve you have to push yourself. So I'm not going to judge someone who's doing that. But yeah some jackleg who is just doing it to say he did it is a different story.
I'm headed out in the am for first day of season. About a foot since last chair so should be decent for early season.

I bought the Epic mix pass this year. Skiing Park City for New Years, Heavenly at the end of January (keep it up El Niño), and Vail in Feb/March.
They are right about the camo gear. The biggest point on this thread I disagree on are the guys who say they are experienced skiers, but worried about where others stop. If you're good ski off piste, or at least above mid mountain where the newbies aren't at other than a green everyone has to use to traverse over. We all had to learn at some point.
How to pizza and French fry

The kid I ran over was when the black I was on turned into a blue after the ridge.

Snowboarders are to be feared and avoided
-if you see a snowboarder, assume they are going to fall in the next 5-10 seconds. They fall all the fricking time. So be prepared to dodge them.
-Never ski on the backside of a snowboarder. Their downhill field of view sucks and they tend to cut randomly and wont see you on their backside.
-Try to avoid riding up a lift with snowboarders, particularly a 6 person lift, they are a clusterfrick getting off a lift with multiple people.
-snowboarders tend to wear earbuds with shitty music turned really loud which makes them even more oblivious to their surroundings
-keep your young children away from snowboarders. They cant complete a sentence without putting "frick" in it
Now that we got trash snowboarders out of the way...
-Never stop in the middle of a trail. If you need to stop then pull off way to the side.
-NEVER EVER stop in the middle of a steep section of a trail. Somebody coming over the top of the ridge may not have time to react.
-do not ski on trails above your ability level. Nothing worse than dipshits pizzaing their way down a groomed black just to say they skied a black
-do not take up a whole trail with your shitty carving
-try to avoid wearing your camo skiiing, you might as well wear a sign that say "im trash"
Have fun out there. Ski slopes are utopia for the OT. Almost no fat people, poor people or minorities.
ETA a few more thoughts
-dont enter the lift line until the rest of the people you plan on riding up with are with you. Dipshits blocking the lift line waiting on people really grinds me gears. Trash Europeans are often the culprits since lift lines are a free for all clusterfrick in Europe but plenty of guilty Americans as well.
-dont pay more attention to your gopro than where you are going, have almost got run into a few times by people holding their gopros trying to get that perfect footage of them going down that blue groomer
-try to keep cursing to a minimum with kids around, trashy AF to curse with little kids around
-dont use the singles line with 2 people and expect to ride up together
I'll add:
-Don't knock other people's shite off the racks or wherever they may be laying up against. If you do, put it back the way it was.
-Don't get in a lift line before you've learned to control your stops.
-DON'T EVER ski/ride over someone else's topsheets, anywhere, anytime. Especially in or around the lift lines. You won't have a good time. You may not care about your cheap POS rentals, but people who own their own shite and spent a lot of money on their setup definitely do.
-Understand you're going to get drunk a lot quicker and with less booze at elevation. Don't be that arsehole that deserves to get punched.
-Learn to carry your skis/snowboard properly. No Texas suitcases.
-When carrying your skis properly, be mindful of others when turning around.
-If you can't ride a t-bar, don't get on one. You probably can't handle the terrain either anyways.
-If you cruise through the park just to check it out and aren't going to attempt anything, hug the trees or the side of the park going down. Don't stand around in front of or below any of features blocking people actually doing shite.
-Never stand below a jump
-There's usually more places to send it than in the park. Recognize those and don't stand below those either. Catwalks/summer roads are the most common where you'll be skiing. If you see a no jumping sign on a run, someone will send it right next to the sign, don't stop below no jumping signs.
-Don't duck ski area boundary ropes to hit the sidecountry. Patrol doesn't do avalanche control and you likely haven't taken an Avy 1 class or even have BC essentials on you. It's just plain retarded to do if you're ill-prepared. (Example: Vail East Chutes, avy deaths every season)
-Don't litter. There's plenty of trash cans everywhere. Put the empty beer can in your pocket and throw it away in a trash can.

The first time I went skiing I went to Wintergreen. I thought I was badass.
Then I went to Park City and about killed myself.
Both fun places.

I'm headed to Park City in February. Can you provide tips on places to stay? It's the wife, me and 2 daughters (8 and 11). TIA

Yeah, i mentioned to roadgator,Winttergreen was my first ski, maybe second. Its been since 1980. I just looked at the trail map and they've added some since I went. It only went over to Diamond Hill, plus they didn't have the tubing parks. They did add those "black diamond" (in parentheses since these aren't real black diamond slopes like you'd find out West) not long after I went.
