So you rode the moving pilot boat and climbed aboard a moving ship as a child?

Yes. I would think that practice is frowned upon these days.
My grandpa told me before I started to climb up, don't fall because we probably won't be able to save you. Held on to that damn rope ladder with everything I had.

Yeah times are different. I drove the Ferry across the river in Wallace as a kid. My uncle took it across the river everyday and was tight with the Captain, he took over when we got to the dock on the other side but I sure thought I was hot shite.

When I was a Cub Scout, we went inside the ATC tower radar room at MSY. They put headsets on about 10 or 12 of us and started up a fake tower/aircraft communication for us to monitor. I remember the controller betting the "pilot" a grape Popsicle that he couldn't land on one wheel. My father was Air Force and even though I was only about 7 or 8, I knew that was a terrible idea...

I did this when I was a young teenager also.

Something most people don't take into consideration when talking about river pilots is that all river captain jobs pay pretty good. A tug boat captain can make $150K+ a year and an offshore supply boat (chouest, etc.) can make a lot more than that.

So they make great money, but need a $50,000 a year raise. Makes sense. LOL

I never said they need a raise.

They already make a ton.

I don't even have an issue with how much they pay. It's the incestuous selection system that is the issue.

Well luckily for you that is no longer the case so you can quite your bitching. You have to have all the requirements and be sponsored by 3 pilots IIRC.

I'm pretty sure that the river boat pilots in La make a lot more than anywhere else in the country.
It does indeed get very expensive for companies to have to pay and it probably has resulted in us losing businesses to other ports at times.

This is def not true. I know for a fact that pilots that work the Houston ship channel and pilots in New York make ALOT more than these guys are trying to make.

Pretty sure the Mobile River Pilot Assoc. over in Mobile is just as corrupt.

Afterall, Mobile is more Louisiana than Alabama.

So much bullshite and misinformation, as usual.

They make closer and in many cases more than 500k.

They work 1 week on then 1 week off with 3 weeks of vacation per year. Wednesday to Wednesday.

Every now and then a non family member gets in.

Most current day pilots have graduated from a maritime college. With a maritime degree, they get voted in (if family) fairly quickly. They spend time as an apprentice before becoming an official pilot on their own but get paid full salary as an apprentice.

Most grow up on the river riding with their dads, so they do have more knowledge than someone who is not family. Still not a valid reason for the nepetatism. Some are complete frick ups who have no business being on the river.

Upon being voted in they have to buy in. Not sure what the current rate is but I want to say it was around 800k a few years ago. They have a sweet deal with a local bank that finances their buy in. I think it's a 10 year note.

Weak sauce.

I can find bars way quicker than that. Can even survive the Queen Bee...
