I hope the people of Alabama can take heed and sacrifice tradition in favor of a healthy future.

quote:

Looking at the average DNA that is shared among relatives, a person shares 50 percent of their DNA with their parents and 50 percent with their siblings. As the degrees shift from 1st to 4th, the percentage of shared DNA drops whereby you end up sharing 12.5 percent of your DNA with your first-cousins.

That shared DNA is significant when those cousins inter-marry. The problem is that the common gene pool from which genetic variation arises becomes smaller and smaller the more one marries within a family. And through such restricted genetic pools, the recessive genes that cause autosomal recessive disorders become dominant and get expressed in the offspring.

The people who need to know the findings of this study won’t be able to read it.

This study is for those outside the U.S.

Hell, everyone knows here that even people from Bama don't marry their cousins.

They marry their siblings.

Can we get Saban to do a PSA to air in between quarters at Bryant-Denny?

Only way this message can be spread appropriately

I was a little surprised to see cousin marriage is actually legal in a number of European countries.

Some of those countries have whole monarchies that were nothing but cousin-marriages in order to sustain themselves.

May I present, the Habsburg jaw.

If you're from a relatively small area that hasn't received an influx of new folks, it's pretty damn hard to find someone that isn't a 6th cousin in some direction.

ETA: shite, that means you share one great-great-great-great-great grandparent. That's pretty fricking distant.

I guarantee I'm 6th cousins nth removed with a lot of you baws. I'm guessing that level of ancestry goes back to the 1780's/90's for me at the latest.

12.5 percent is plenty enough hybrid vigor to breed. I know because it was part of my cattle breeding classes

Everyone knows you make sure to wear a rubber when slanging the Pringle’s can to that one sexy, but trashy cousin every family has.
