Schwinn announces that it is bringing bicycle production back to the US from China

"This is the first time Schwinns have been manufactured in the U.S. in a long time," said Zak Pashak, owner and founder of Detroit Bikes. "Manufacturing has been decreasing in the U.S., and this is a big step to change that. We’re going to need to step up our game for this one. But we’re ready to take on the challenge.”
The Schwinn Collegiate to be produced in Detroit is intended to reflect “the leisurely aesthetic evoked by the 1965 version”, according to Ryan Birkicht, senior communications manager at Schwinn Bikes. The bikes will be painted in classic Campus Green.
The price will be higher than other Schwinn models, expected at $998 each. They will be available to purchase as early as August on Walmart's website, Birkicht said.
“Walmart is our No. 1 retailer,” he said.
As demand for all bikes and other outdoor equipment is booming amid pandemic restrictions, Detroit Bikes is eager to bring at least a part of the bicycle manufacturing industry back to domestic soil.

For that price you can pick up a better than entry level road bike with carbon fiber everything but frame.

We can crush China if our companies bring back manufacturing. Of course, American hunger for the lowest price plus the greed of unions will prevent it from ever happening full scale.

The switch to "Made in America" is probably more of a logistics issue than pride of country.

i had to pick something up at sun & ski sports the other day and the entire back of the store where they have bike racks was completely empty.
i asked the guy if they were getting out of the bike business and he said no, we're 3 months out on inventory and we haven't had a shipment from CHINA longer than that so we're sold out.
i guess all these so-called high end brands at the end of the day sling carbon in chinese sweat shops and slap a fancy label on it.

It seems like they're trying to cash in on the hipster retro angle but they need to distance this line from Walmart if they want it to be successful. People interested in a varsity green Schwinn throwback want to buy it from someone with a handlebar mustache at a local bike shop that also sells coffee.

Yep, unfortunately. The Chinese labor costs are pennies on a dollar compared to the U.S. workforce. Then throw in unions and it quickly gets out of hand. The price of Schwinn's are going to go up.
