If you read the Telegraph article this Yahoo one is based off of there is no mention of this being some sort of trend at all. It's just one headmaster who is saying younger kids should have a large group of friends instead of just one best friend.

My kids school has been doing that for awhile. If the administration thinks cliques are forming, they separate those kids for the next year. Parents rationale it and look at the silver lining inclusiveness angle. Yes, kids will find a new friend in their class. But the kids are always disappointed that their best friend is no longer around. I think it’s shortsighted and creates instability.
Not saying policies like this are the reason, but I find kids in general are much more accepting than me and my classmates were. The Lord of the Flies/Darwinism of the 80s schoolyard is gone, for better or for worse.

I don't think this is a terrible idea.
Obviously kids are going to gravitate towards certain peers and be better/best friends with a few students that are similar to them. That's just how life works. But encouraging students to include others isn't a terrible idea, especially at a young age IMO. A lot of it just comes down to teaching kids not to be little assholes.

There will always be those strange kids that won't like anyone but that other strange kid, and who nobody else likes. Separate them and hope the regular kids include them and wait for them to crack.

There will always be people that just aren't liked. Some people have shitty personalities and are miserable to be around. Others may just enjoy the loner lifestyle. I'm just saying that encouraging kids to include others doesn't seem like a terrible idea.
