In the last few months, the trend has moved from Europe to America, according to Barbara Greenberg, a clinical psychologist specializing in family and relationship issues. Why would schools do such a thing? “They want to foster inclusivity,” Greenberg tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “And they want their schools to be characterized as having children that don’t exclude other ones. So what they did was take an extreme stance, which was to ban the whole concept of best friends in the hope that children would then form a group of friends.”

quote:

Of course, that’s a lot to ask. “The backlash is that ‘It’s just natural for children to have best friends. How can you take away kids’ best friends?’” Greenberg, who sparked controversy when she wrote an article about the concept for U.S. News & World Report in January, wants to make sure the heart of the message is heard. “I think the real message is being lost here,” she points out, “and the real message is that we want children to be more inclusive and to think about who else they can invite to play with them, to join in with them.”

Yes!! Now let's forcefully interrupt normal social development. That friend is ok, but you HAVE TO HAVE all of these other friends, too.

I hate this new world we live in, where opinions like this are given credence.

Exclusion is usually a deterrent to abnormal/weird behavior.

Baby Boomers grew up, fricked this country, and then raised a psychotic group of retards.

Is there anything worse than Boomers and Gen X?

Exactly. Obviously this ban would be completely unenforceable, but the fact it is viewed as a legitimate course of action backed by sociological theory says a lot about where we are as a society.

Millennials and Boomers catch a lot of grief on here and elsewhere, but it's the Gen Xers that are predominantly doing this and fricking with kids' development and discipline. It's time we start calling out that generation of lunatics.

I guess everyone will have a secret BFF. Its hard to go against human instincts.

On the more interesting side does this lead to forced polygamy?

Not saying that I think the idea in the OP is a perfect solution or even a good idea... But in an extremely broad sense, I think it's good to teach children how to recognize when someone's being/feeling left out.

I don't really see this plan of discouraging BFFs working in practice, but I do like the ideas some schools are having about 'friendship benches' and so on. It gives kids a nudge in that direction without heavily engineering the outcome.

Let kids learn that shite on their own as they get older and mature, just as we've always done it. No need for that. And people wonder why millennials suck so bad.

If you read the article, then you realize that the subject line in this post is misleading. Schools will never ban kids from saying they have a best friend.

Making kids more lonely, isolated, and upset than they already are today. This is a God damn BRILLIANT idea right here.

Has anyone watched the new Chris Rock stand-up on Netflix? I think he does a good job explaining bullying..We need bullies.. Because kids need to realize the world is filled with assholes and need to learn how to deal with it as early as possible.

I know he is a comedian and has to come up with edgy shite that he can make jokes about, but I really think he has a point. Schools shouldn't create a false environment for kids.. Because the second shite doesn't go their way, they don't know how to handle it. Life is not fair. People need to learn now to maximize their situation and what they were born with. If someone is ugly, stinks and is stupid, they shouldn't be told they are just like everyone else.. They need to know what they are working with so they can adapt to their situation.
