We’ve known for about a week now an arctic blast was coming. They should have taken the necessary precautions to prevent any issues.
What precautions should've been taken exactly?

At bare minimum, have maintenance confirm that exposed pipes are properly insulated/wrapped.
Make sure heating systems are functioning properly.
This isn’t the first time Louisiana has had cold weather.
Last time snow stuck to the ground was in 2008.

This morning I talked to my daughter in Chicago. They were at -7, wind chill at -20. And schools were open.

“Umm…yes.” - Chicago, and probably every else in the world

They don’t want kids waiting for busses in single digit weather? Seems logical for a population that is not accustomed to that type of cold nor has the proper gear to withstand it.

Actually, DOTD has apparently gotten ready for the weather in that they have been salting the bridges overnight. I can't recall that ever happening in Louisiana.
The I-10 Basin Bridge is still closed due to sheets of ice.
I don't normally agree with most of these closings in advance, but with the ice storm last night, this one was probably a good idea.

Do you want 4, 5 and 6 year old children standing in potentially 15 degree weather to catch a bus?
I have a 6 year old and he'll be fine. You do realize kids up north go to school this time of year as well?

No wonder the north won.

Driving around up north and out west in the winter is pretty eye-opening. Those people go full send regardless of what's going on outside. Foot of snow and 50mph winds and the plows haven't passed yet? F'it, going to subway for lunch.
I also got to see a truck smashed into a guardrail, one wrecked into a gigantic rock, and one that sent himself off a cliff. Those people are fricking nuts.

Y'all don't forget to tip your kid's bus drivers next time you see them.

2017. But point taken.

I actually think its a non parent thing, which is more weird
Anyone complaining is welcome to drive a bus tomorrow while its dark to pick up kids on probably frozen roads

People in those areas dont drive on ice either, no one does...Not sure why some cant make that distinction here

Do they deal with it all the time? Do they have appropriate clothes? We have had 10,000 wrecks in the south when the same weather produces no wrecks in Midwest. The 2 aren’t the same.
Posted on 1/16/24 at 11:40 am to GrammarKnotsi
Probably because students have to get on buses with no heat and sit at a transfer point on that same bus with no heat

Southern man is weaker than his northern brother.
How disappointing.
