I mean maybe there are some rural roads or whatever that school busses can’t make.

According to the news and traffic accounts on Twitter, everything appeared clear and the interstate was wide open at 5am.

How many kids in Louisiana have winter coats? I can’t imagine that many.

Schools probably just don’t wanna hear the bitchin from parents about their kids freezing outside.

First of all, you don't cancel school based on whether or not a few kids have the right jacket. You can put on multiple layers of clothes and be fine in 20-30 degree weather. And if a kid doesn't have a coat to stay warm on their way to school, there is a decent chance they would be warmer at school and get better lunches than they would at home.

Right.

I’m trying to better understand the logic behind the decision-making. Not saying it’s right.

Several issues at play

Several parishes have older school buildings that are harder to heat up and retain heat

Safety issue at school with ice patches and kids being generally dumb around it

Safety issues for student who have to stand and wait for a bus

Issue that some students come from poor parents and can't properly get warm enough clothes

Safety issue that Louisiana school buses are not equipped for cold weather. They don't have heaters, no seatbelts, sit high off the ground so any ice on the road from previous ice melting becomes and issue.

Safety issue of adults driving for some of those reasons

Schools have days built in for hurricane and weather in Louisiana. What they will do is change an early dismissal, teacher in-service, or "fun" day for students into a classroom day. It is better to err on the side of caution than to have something happen. Even if it inconveniences some individuals.

A school here in north AL had a couple pipes burst and completely flood a large portion of the school. A majority of the ceilings will have to he replaced from the looks or it. They will have virtual class through Monday, and go from there.

They weren't in class when it happened, of course.
