Scammers spoofing local numbers are OOC

If I'm not getting a call from the IRS or Chevy letting me know I may be eligible for an extended warranty, I'm trying to explain to an old lady that it wasn't actually me who called her. Why haven't they cracked down on this crap yet?

I never answer my phone if they aren't in my contacts.

This is hands-down my fave reason for keeping my LA number after I moved away. I just send all 225 numbers straight to vmail.

I've kept them on the line to actually try to figure out exactly what the "scam" is supposed to be and it either ends up with them cursing me out or hanging up on ME.
I don't get it.

Worst part is it's usually a hangup call. Those infuriate me.
If it's an actual scammed and I can get them on the line, I can at least troll them and waste their time.

I hope the company behind all these calls gets overrun by zombies

I just waste as much of their time as I can if they call me on my commute home. I give fake names, fake social numbers, fake addresses, ask them to repeat themselves 25 times, say wildly inappropriate things, then at the end, I tell them I'm just wasting their time so they don't rob someone who doesn't know they are thieves.
It is actually fun making Apu mad.
ETA: Another good one is to sound a little out of breath, kinda grunt like you're getting a beej, then tell them to slow down and moan while you give them a fake name. Indian guys are super homophobic so they lose their shite when you do shite like that. First you have to get them going with fake shite like you're gonna give them something, then just casually ask what they are wearing. Then ask them to take it off. Hilarious.

How do you reach this point even? I never can.

It's especially fun when they call you from your own phone number.

Definitely OOC. I get at least 5 random number calls a day. None ever leave a voicemail, so I know it’s bullshite

Yep. If it's not a contact I know, I don't answer.
Sucks because sometimes I'll miss a call that isn't spam, but if they really need something they'll leave a voicemail.

I've actually had some fun with the Indian guys pretending to be the IRS. Told them I was a Satanist and asked about deductability of human sacrifice expenses; told them that I supported Trump's plans to invade India, etc. Good times. But mostly I just don't answer the phone if I don't know the number.

I could deal with it if there were actual people. Most of the time it's automated or silence

Something new hit us yesterday:
four spoofing numbers, all different, all within 25 minutes, all from the same area code and first three digits of our phone.

Press 1 to speak to someone in India. Then have fun. Make sure you keep your fake details in order or they catch on pretty quick.
my favorite SSN is 468-67-5309
favorite fake name is Carl Weathers
