I'll be honest, I was "over it" originally but have since become more interested.
Despite what our Dateline-loving nation would reflect, if this isn't a family/close circle thing, things like this are remarkably rare. Although we've had an uptick in (in my view) of outlier criminal events lately:
- Trump attempt #1 and #2
- Kirk assassination (extremely rare for modern US)
- Healthcare assassination, which was obviously notable (honestly would have been even more rare/notable if it had been a professional hit as widely discussed)
- If this proves to be a genuine kidnapping for ransom that isn't connected to family/inner circle, it'll be in that category.

Let's not forget this little gem out of Minnesota which involved targeted attacks on politicians and their spouses. Guy had a hit list of 45 politicians. A wild case that got superseded by events.

If you're not aware, the Today Show is watched by millions of people every morning. There are a lot of people invested in this story because they feel like they have a personal connection to Savannah Guthrie, even though the actually don't. It is basic human psychology.
Full disclosure: I have not watched the Today Show in probably 30 years, but I still know who she is.
