Well, no, but the fact that they even have them is infuriating.

Most of the time rehab isn’t even enough for a non-homeless person to stay sober. I forget the stats, but I’d guess that for every one person I know who went to rehab and maintained sustained sobriety for a long period of time, I know at least 5 who relapsed within 3 months, some of them 3 days.

When we think of “homeless” most of them need so much more than just rehab. They would probably need at least a year of being locked up, honestly. Some of them, forever.

We just need to get them off the streets and try to get to these people when they’re younger before they go too far down the path.

Most have no desire to work. As the floor keeps getting lifted, many more will join their ranks.

For those who are against asylums, why? Even for drug addicts, maybe start with a 6-month inpatient rehab with life skills and job training/placement. But if, after that, they still can’t function in society without harming themselves or others, are they not mentally ill? It seems that there are different subsets of homeless. The ones who are down on their luck, started from poverty, but just need low-cost housing could live in traditional shelters. Without the violent ones, it would be safer and they could even go to work while living there and saving money for real housing. The ones with severe mental illness who aren’t able to make it on the outside even with treatment would be the ones who go to long-term inpatient mental health (asylums.) The ones with drug and alcohol issues should get at least one or 2 tries at real rehab (i think 3-6 months.) Anyone who’s just a violent sociopath would go to prison.

The only reasons people would want to be around hobos are the following:

1 To make money

People have sympathy for hobos haven’t been around hobos.

This gets turned up to 11 when UBI is implemented.

The future looks like a dystopian nightmare.

The more money thrown in wouldn’t do any good

Give them a mansion in bel air and they’d still trash it

Resources only get you so far . Human behavior is a large part of it too and when they’re feral animals, well.. animals do what animals do

I saw the guy who runs the Soft White Underbelly channel on Rogan's podcast. All he does is interview homeless people and even he basically said: "You could give one of them a million dollars and they would still frick it up."

Friend of ours was a major contractor in Chicago for over 20 years. They built high rise public housing. He said they would go back for warranty repairs, etc... for several years and the degradation and destruction of those places was unbelievable.

He said it was very common to see holes in the walls between neighbors so they could share phones. This is back when phones were corded. Light fixtures in many places would be removed a just a socket and bulb would be left. Carpets stained and tore completely up. Bathrooms completely wrecked, toilet lids just gone. Toilet tank covers just gone. Ovens and stoves a complete wreck.

He always said they don't respect anything because they didn't pay for any of it.

Texas has a great model, giving them a home is not enough. They need to have supportive services or they continue to live like they did on the "outside".

Many of them have PTSD or other mental health conditions.

In short, hurt people, hurt people, and their surroundings.

It costs $1.50 at taco bell to consume at least 500 calories. That's how.

Those idiots will say with a straight face that there is a housing crisis and that expensive housing costs are causing the homeless problem.

You could give these homeless people a mansion and a million dollars and in a year or less, the house would be burned down and the money gone.

The problem with "rehab" or most programs is they assume there's something there to work with.

The reality of probably 90% of street people is they are beyond help in normal terms. After years of daily hard core drug and alcohol abuse, their brains are rewired such that they cannot perform even menial, repeatable tasks such as stocking shelves, working retail, etc. for hours at a time. They would require constant supervision / direction to get any kind of productivity out of them. Zombies essentially.

As a society, what's our responsibility to help these people get repointed to as normal a life as possible? Most of them made a litany of bad decisions to get where they are. It's a cycle that has no end if we continue to allow cheap illegal drugs into our country. So I say just leave them alone. Provide them places to camp and then move them occassionally, cleaning up their mess with backhoes and loaders. After all, it's still a free country.

Glad I live 30 miles from any city.
