Addiction is the consequence of looking for healing and fulfillment in other things besides Jesus Christ. There, I said it.

Prine was ahead of his time with this one. A large number of Vietnam vets came back with an opioid addiction and Prine wrote the song about that. The reality of the FDA approving so many opioids since then is sickening. Our govt knew the consequences and their actions are criminal.

Prine's live rendition of Lake Marie and Far From Me are my two favorite live songs of his.

Below is a good way to spend an hour.

The FDA, big pharma and greedy doctors are all complicit and will never be truly held accountable.

<——Prine fan

Notice that everyone so far in this thread has referred to him in the present tense.

That mailman sure was talented and deep.

It tells a more powerful story on how shitty we’ve historically treated war veterans.

Great song. I love John Prine. Are you a Townes Van Zandt fan? Country guys back then sure could write some lyrics.

Love this song. That’s my favorite part.

What does he mean by little pitchers have big ears?

That confused me too, I had to look it up.

Basically means that kids understand and realize a lot more than we give them credit for.

That’s kind of what I thought but I wasn’t sure. I used to listen to John Prine and hole I was cutting grass and this song would make me stop and think for a bit every time.

Dopamine is a helluva drug.

While I agree with the sentiment on alcoholism, there are many, many other addictions. And this is coming from a former addict. Legal and illegal drugs, gambling, pornography, eating disorders, risky behaviors and even the internet. Anything that gives someone a shot of dopamine has the potential to become addictive.

It is by far the best anti-war song ever written. It shows the consequences of war on a personal level. Too bad the monsters that represent us in DC would sacrifice thousands of soldiers if it made them another buck.

Regardless of who gets credit for writing this song, this is Townes' song.

I really think it’s amazing how people can take the same song, same words and just make it completely different. That’s a great one.
