So I was looking down on my car yesterday and noticed two somewhat sizable patches of rust on the roof. Trashy I know.

Not sure how long they’ve been there and they’re both probably 3-4” in diameter. Maybe one is a little bit bigger. I did a little googling to see methods but wanted to see what the board said as well. I assume I’ll have to sand it down a bit and then coat over the metal.

It’s the roof on an SUV so odds are nobody is really ever going to see it unless you’re looking at it from a story or two up like I was so I really don’t care if the colors match perfectly or even at all.

Cheap interest rates today. I’d donate your vehicle, take the tax credit and finance something over $40k for at least 72 months.

No way I would trust myself or a body shop to get the rust out of the paint/clear coat. Rates are so cheap today that one can treat their vehicle as disposable.

You live near the ocean? My aunt and uncle lived in Gulf Port years ago and had this problem with their vehicles

You could probably do nothing and it will be fine. It will take a long time for the rust to grow to a point where it actually becomes an issue.

How long do you plan to keep it?

At least 5+ more years. Hopefully more. It only has 75k miles and I put about 10k a year on it. Less with covid. I’ve had friends with this same car within a year take it to 200k+

Since it's on the roof and not easily visible you can paint it with POR-15. That stuff does work in my experience. You might want to cover it with some primer or even color-matched paint, not so much for cosmetics but because POR-15 is sensitive to the sun.

By the time you get the sanding stuff you need, painting (the poly, primer, paint, clear coat and protection) and the time you put into it, prolly cheaper and will look better done by a shop or a local guy that comes to the car

Ironically we’re all now looking down on you, Patches.

I’m depending on you son.

It’s not rust. It’s clear coat peeling from sun damage.

You could either take it to a shop or ignore it. Sanding, priming, resurfacing, and repainting is a giant process that is probably not worth your time.

I had the issue with my truck. ... and yes it was a Toyota Tacoma. Seems to be a huge issue with these trucks in certain colors from certain years. Hopefully Toyota has remedied that problem.

My truck was nearly 10 years old and I didn't want to spend a fortune on a paint job. Went to a local body shop and they were going to charge about 3k just to repaint the roof and hood--the only places where the rust was showing. But they couldn't warranty the work. So I just went get a cheap paint job done by MAACO about 3 years ago. They painted the entire truck for about $1200. Cheap? Yes. And it is showing wear again...but still looks better than it did when it was rusting. If I have it another year or two, I may just get another cheap paint job again. Just not worth putting that much money into my truck that's 13 years old.

I’m really hoping I can get away with sanding/buffing/sealing it myself. It’s the roof and really don’t care if it looks a little rough.
