This is one depressing thread. Geez.

Agreed. In addition to the lay offs you get a good snap shot on human nature. Deep down, most people feel envy and resentment at those that are successful. They love to see those that have been successful pulled back into the misery of life.

I guess I didn't take her "half a functioning brain" comment literally

Our nation will take a hit financially when that happens, but good god it will be so beneficial in the long run.
i think the guy from The Big Short, Steve Carell's character, is betting big on the college bubble to pop next.

Steve Eisman is his name, it was changed to Mark Baum for the movie.

all the people screaming about how great cheap gas is really don't have a clue. People are currently throwing a temper tantrum about JBL's proposed tax increases well you know what they are directly related to the fall in the price of oil. Louisiana's budget suffers something like 12.5 million for every dollar decrease in the barrel of oil. Great you get cheap gas and save a few hundred a year but you are about to pay a higher sales tax on everything with the possibility of income tax rates being moved. Gotta love fools with that have no sense of how economics work.. But hey enjoy the 1.58 gas prices. FYI I am not in the oilfield or anything oilfield related.

How much of the business is from the refinery construction in Lake Charles and how much of it is offshore?

This kind of comment isn't any different than someone saying you shouldn't live along the Gulf Coast and expect any sympathy when it comes to hurricanes or you shouldn't live in CA and expect any sympathy when an earthquake strikes.

I'll never understand the sentiment of "frick you, you should have known better."

FWIW, I work in the banking and investment field so I'm relatively insulated.

When the market crashed in 2008 and lots of attorneys were affected this board didn't seem to mind. They laughed and were elated by it.

I am better than that so I truly feel sorry for the people who have families to support. Everything has a cost.

I have an uncle that owns a pretty successful business but he plays down how successful he has been from everything to what he drives, how he dresses etc. He's in a small town where everyone knows everyone and he told me years ago that people never want to see anyone doing better than them so flaunting that his business was doing well would actually hurt him because people would go elsewhere.

It makes complete sense because that's human nature for most people to be competitive and jealous. It really should be no surprise and an anonymous message board allows for people to say what they truly think.

I'll never understand the reactionary nature of that business. I drive by Eldridge (Energy Corridor) near daily. So I see it first hand.

2008-09? OH shite! OMG! ONOZ! Everything shuts down, everybody laying off. Slow recovery and a boom happens in the next 3-4 years? Buildings get thrown up all down the Corridor or expanded. Eldridge and I-10 has massive construction that already looks foolish. They dont have enough time to complete construction projects before they are laying off again?

Why expand THAT much?

I think the Katy/Fulshear housing BOOM is done.

I'm not saying frick you guys or anything like that. Just questioning those above you and the business model in general. Can someone with an MBA explain it to me like a child?

I DO love filling my car with a $20. Almost like college. In college I could get enough change for a beer. A BAD beer, but still.

Come on, Wee. You've got to address that. You can't cripple yourself in your training by refusing to do something about that insomnia, if it's chronic. That would be irresponsible.

Oh it's 100% refinery construction. But it's 20 billion dollars. That's a lot of dough.

Well said. I think being competitive is great. Being jealous and envious is not. On the other side of the coin, bragging isn't good either.

I will try to tell my wife that NOLA needs us.

We will have to make a trip and infuse a bit of cash in the local economy. It's my DUTY to The Motherland.

No doubt. Just curious on the percentage of offshore versus onshore.

It does seem to have a bull whip effect on the local economy.

A similar thing happened in the late 80's. It caused a recession with a very poor job market, especially in the Gulf states. Be careful what you wish for.

It also had a lot to do with Bill Clinton beating George Bush 41 for the Presidency. Look where we're at today as a result. I contend that this nation would be a lot better off had that chain of events not occurred.

Yeah, nobody cared when the Bush Medicare Part D plans and Obamacare both gutted the pharmaceutical industry and 60% layoffs happened in my field.

Can you imagine the reaction if I posted something along the lines of "Glad everyone is cheering about your cheaper blood pressure medication while good people are getting laid off. Would it really kill people to pay $50 more a month for your meds?"?

I'd get downvoted into oblivion.

I have no idea how obamacare works or if it will help this situation but in the past the medical industry was most definitely hurt. No jobs=no insurance....no insurance means you don't see a dr unless you absolutely have to

Obamacare makes people have insurance.
