There are quite a few really good songs on that list. But there are some really bad ones too. Rolling Stone needs to stop making lists.
This.
The last few lists I've seen from them like this have had absolutely no cohesiveness in what the criteria is that determines said list.
Including rap, bluegrass, pop, and country music on the list automatically makes me ask "Do you know what rock is?".
In the intro to the list there's a comment:
quote:
Their only thing in common is that they rock.
If that's the criteria, well, that kind of says it all.

Honestly, I have never heard anything from them.
You should take the time to listen to Black Parade start to finish as an album, since its a concept album. I didn't do that until only a few years ago, because I was dismissive of the entire genre.
I was shocked by how good it was, albeit some of it dated

The only Killers song I really jam to

Also lost me when they had Reptilia - The Strokes all the way down at like 138.
I'd rank almost every song on Is This It above most of the songs on the entire list but that's just me.
The first four songs on Room on Fire were absolute bangers and any one of the four could be on a list like this ("Reptilia" included). Kind of forget how genre-defining they were when they first came out.

Wait... you don't love it like they love it. Maps. Maps. Maps. Maps. Lyrically a shite song but it has that catchy guitar plucking thing between verses.
But it’s a chick singer so that’s why it’s #1

People are kind of ridiculous about MCR I think. They get lumped into this brainless shite emo era
But they made good records. I think Black Parade is an actual great record, one of the best of that decade.
Again, they were after my time, but I think old people need to get over it. At least they were making Rock Music, and some fairly hard music at times.
Would you rather Rock just be almost completely dead like it is now?
Rock isn't completely dead though. It's just not as radio friendly anymore.

It's obviously indefensible in its own right, but if they're going to do this, how do they not do any Taylor Swift songs?
I saw one Taylor Swift song.
But I would put Fate of Ophelia on this list. I love that song.

Yep. Courtney Love killed it.

New Rock is relatively dead as a mainstream genre
Its making a comeback, but we have gone through a 10 year period of rockbottom

Granted, it's not aimed at the khaki-shorts, New Balance, Foo Fighters dad-rock crowd whose idea of discovering new music is hearing an unfamiliar Coldplay song while shopping for a leaf blower at Home Depot. So I'm not surprised half this board thinks the genre died when their musical curiosity did.

Ive never even heard the #1 song in my life and had to go to Youtube. It's utter crap

Maturing is realizing that AIC was the best band from that era. Not Nirvana

I know two songs on this list. I miss rock music.

Yea I'm not even a big Nirvana guy but I do think that Nirvana was the last time that "rock" music was really culturally relevant in an organic way.

You're having a different definition of "dead"
There are still rock musicians out there that are successful and making good music
"Dead" in this context means dominating the charts, the biggest radio songs, the biggest MTV songs (if that were still a thing), pervasive in pop culture, large swaths of kids whose identities are intertwined with it
We have seen a resurgence of it in the past 3 years or so post covid among Gen Alpha (and coincidentally with the death of USAID)
There are newer bands like Fontaines DC, Goose (and Geese, confusingly), doing really well right now though

I’ll give a try the next time I’m listening to my Spotify.

That’s fine because I am myself dated.

I'd argue the "best" rock band of the last 30 years was RHCP, but they never really reached the heights of pop culture the way Nirvana did.

or it was just the last time you paid attention to it?
because that is a ridiculous statement

If you were in HS mid to late 80s, U2 was a very significant band. War, Joshua Tree, The Unforgettable Fire were great albums.
The older I get the more my musical tastes expand. I equally enjoy listening to Frank Sinatra, Slayer, Iron Maiden, The Who, The Killers, Black Keys, The Sound of Music soundtrack, or an old radio broadcast of National Barn Dance from the 40s. Heck, I still watch the Grand Olde Opry on Saturday nights.
That said, there is a lot of new "rock" music that I just don't get into or it takes me a while to warm up to. There is still good rock music, it's just not a common experience like it used to be. Rock music today is fragmented.

There shouldn't have been any Taylor Swift songs on a rock song list.
And I generally like Taylor Swift. She's not a rock artist anymore than Jay-Z is.
