I think this is a little messed up, Sting already owns 85% of Lucid Dreams, the song that has more than 2B streams, for reference 2B streams should bring in around $25M.

On December 8, 2019, Higgins suffered a medical emergency at Chicago's Midway International Airport and died. He had just turned 21

quote:

The $15 million lawsuit brought against Juice WRLD by pop-punk band Yellowcard over his hit single “Lucid Dreams” was put on hold last week after the tragic and untimely passing of the 21-year-old rapper. XXL has now confirmed, though, that Yellowcard are going to continue pursuing the lawsuit. XXL states that, according to court documents obtained on December 17th, Yellowcard have extended the time period in which Juice WRLD and co-defendants Taz Taylor, Nick Mira, Grade A Productions and Interscope Records, from December 9th until February 4th, 2020.

Yellowcard first filed their lawsuit in October, alleging that “Lucid Dreams” contains elements of their 2006 album track “Holly Wood Died.” The lawsuit was notable because, according to producer Mira, a large portion of the royalties from the song already went to Sting.

So Sting already milked him 85% of the streaming royalties and Yellowcard wants $15M from him too.
For the who is Juice Wrld crowd

quote:

The young rapper was streamed more than 38.2 million times on Sunday — nearly three times as much as any other artist — and was also the leader in digital song sales

quote:

Juice WRLD’s on-demand audio streams spiked 487 percent on Sunday to over 38.2 million in the U.S., nearly 24 million more than any other artist. Songs by Juice WRLD accounted for four of the top 10 songs across platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.

“Lucid Dreams,” the wounded, Sting-sampling track that hurtled him into stardom, was the most-streamed song of the day, with nearly 4.4 million on-demand audio streams, according to data from BuzzAngle Music. “Legends,” which features the eerily prophetic lyrics “What’s the 27 Club? / We ain’t making it past 21,” was fourth with 3.1 million. “Robbery” and “All Girls Are the Same” followed at seventh and ninth, respectively.

“Lucid Dreams” was also the Number One song in digital sales that day, with over 3,000 digital downloads. “Legends” followed at Number Six, with over 1,700. Overall, Juice WRLD was the Number One artist by digital song sales on Sunday with over 9,600 — an increase of over 2,700 percent from the day before.

Sad to see him go out at his peak at just 21, he was streamed more than 10B times last year alone.

It's not their fault he ripped their music off, made money, and then drank too much codeine

It's a matter of legality, not feelings/emotions.

They have to do it just on principle.

The music industry is messed up in general. The concept that you have to sign over rights to your own music to get air time sucks big time and has really hurt the music industry.

I DGAF one bit about Kanye West but I read about his agreements with his music label and it is virtually impossible for him to get out of his contract and make any money on the music he's already made. He cannot change labels because it forfeits his royalty payment. He is obligated to produce music in the same fashion he always has and I believe there is a requirement for certain top chart records to be hit.

Haven't read anything definitely on Tool's hiatus but I believe it is something similar and Maynard just DGAF and sat on the sidelines and refused to produce anything while under a label's thumb.

It's easier than it's ever been to get content out to the general public via youtube, soundcloud, your own damn blog, anything.

This has nothing to do with the issue at hand. Bands need to get a lawyer before they sign a contract.

Juice World, or more importantly his management and record company, just have checked to make sure they got clearances for all his samples. Its their own fault they're getting sued.

Sounds like he either negotiated his record deal without an agent or with a really terrible one.

His 1st single released 16 years ago. Did he sign a lifetime contract?

I get when you're a young, starving artist without many avenues to make it big. But once you're already successful, if you continue to sign those contracts, then it's hard to feel sorry for you.
