Why in the world would u turn yourself in? Obviously robbing a bank is beyond dumb, but to double down and turn yourself in.

1. Become buddies with a loan officer

2. Have him issue a loan using nonexistent or overvalued collateral in exchange for a kickback.

3. Repeat as many times as you can get away with it.

4. Invest some of your profit in a good white collar criminal defense lawyer for when the shite inevitably hits the fan. Leave the stockholders and Uncle Sam through the FDIC holding the bag.

I was a bank teller in college (about 20 years ago) and we had one robbery, one attempt.

First one, guy with a pistol and ski-mask runs in clearly with no plan because he ran towards the personal banker’s desks and tried to get into the obviously locked vault. He then comes back into the lobby and leaps over the counter.

The lobby tellers had all run into the break room so it was just us in the drive-thru room. He comes in and we all get on the floor with keys in cash drawers and tell him take what he wants. He opens them one-by-one, grabs what he can, leaps over the counter and runs out the door. We had all hit our panic buttons while he was figuring out the vault was locked. He was caught pretty quickly and convicted. I got a call a few years later asking if I wanted to send a written statement in for his next parole hearing.

After that, the branch installed “buzzer doors” that the lobby tellers had to unlock for each visitor. Shortly after that, a couple of guys with stocking caps ran up to the door with guns drawn, yanked on it and took off.

TL;DR: Some get away with it, but most criminals are idiots.

It's surprisingly easy to get away with from what I've seen on those "True Crime" type shows on TV. Especially for the serial bank robber until they get greedy.

I've seen shows where the robber/robbers get away with many hundreds of thousands over time but they are well organized and don't just hit the tellers up for what's in their cash drawers.

Most will steal a car to use as the getaway vehicle and have their own car several blocks away so they can get into one nobody has a description of. Many times they rob banks near interstates or highways to get distance from the bank as quickly as possible.

It's when they start getting greedy is when they usually mess up and once they get a name by the media, there seems to be more interest in catching them. It is a Federal Crime, so the FBI is in on it from the start, and they are pretty good at what they do. All a robber has to do is make one mistake and it could be all over for them.

Check out the bank robbing career of a guy dubbed "Hollywood" who donned disguises or another who they called "Robin the Hood" who claimed he was robbing banks to help the poor-----he was the only poor he helped------well, him and his drug supplier.....

Many years ago, the wife of a friend was a manager in a bank. Someone walked in, gave a note to the teller saying he had a bomb and he wanted $$$. Teller somehow signaled manager, manager came over to talk to robber, robber showed her the note. Manager said, "I can help you with that, sir, won't you take a seat in my office over there and we will get your $$$." Robber goes to manager's office, manager hustles all the employees & customers out of the bank and locks door behind her. Police show up and arrest the guy still sitting in the manager's office.

When I worked at a bank, some guy tried to rob the armored truck guy bringing cash into the branch.

Truck driver walks into the bank with the bags of money.

Robber walks in behind him and pulls a gun

Teller sees the gun and screams

Truck driver pulls his gun, turns around, and shoots the robber three times center mass.

The robber falls, but keeps on trying to get up.

Armored truck driver puts a couple of more slugs into him for good measure.

Robber bleeds out and dies on the bank branch floor.

They'd broken out of prison to begin with, so the feds were hot on their tail. I think they thought they were getting caught eventually, so just turn yourself in and beg for mercy for a better deal. Wikipedia says "Gale and Evelle return to prison, having realized that they are not ready for society".

If I was going to, it wouldn't be in the trashy up front way. I'm more of a white collar crime guy.

My high school biology teacher robbed a bank. On a bicycle. Wearing a motorcycle helmet.

You may find this hard to believe, but that guy was an idiot.

Sounds like you failed your frog dissection test and still have issues with that.

So I knew someone that recently attempted to rob a bank (he’s no friend, just someone that ate and a restaurant I frequented). It got me thinking, how many robberies have actually been successful? With all the cameras and phones it seems dumb on all levels.

My friend’s dad robbed a bank in the 1980s. They lived a couple of streets away, and hid the money in the walls of their house.

This kid had every toy you could think of.

Then one day police cars filled their street and the whole family was taken away in cuffs.

New Orleans East was an awesome place to grow up.

Remember in 2020 when everyone was walking into the bank wearing a mask? Covid was such a clown show.

If I had been born in the 1800s this would have been my dream job. Out in the wild, workin’ off a horse, holdin’ up trains and banks like Butch and Sundance, givin’ money and sex to whores in saloons, shootin’ whiskey with the gang… that is some freedom livin’ fit for an outlaw of the American frontier.

Knockin’ off a Hancock Whitney in Ville Platte for $600 dollars just doesn’t have the same romanticism to it.

So to a small town that has active rail roads. If you can figure out away... call something in.. That would get the city police on the other side of the tracks when a train is passing that can buy you some time.

Also something else you can use. All schools that have busses at the location, there is a very good chance the keys are left in the bus. Its just information you can use, depending on how close schools are to the bank. Plan it so you can be at the bus around the time school lets out so that you will blend in.. But it can only be used as a get away vehicle, you will have to dump it.

What I would do is.. Have your other get away located... Lets say north of the town you robbed a bank. Once you are in that car, go south so that you will pass through the town where you robbed a bank because once they discover the bus, they will assume you kept heading north.

Leave the cellphone at home.

This are just a few things that you can think about if you are planning to rob a bank.

There are a couple within a 20 mile radius of me that have been robbed with no one caught.

Amazing thing is one had a die pack explode on him and the other had been found on camera getting fuel before the robbery. Seems like they would have been easily found. But no more leads.

The guy who robbed several banks nationwide in 2013 robbed one near here and wound up shooting and killing one police officer and wounding another. He got away and wound up being killed in Phoenix, AZ at another robbery.
