I always feel bad for the turtles. They probably waited for the road to be clear, looked both ways and started sprinting. Splat, not quick enough.

I hit a gator that was crossing I-10 when I was driving to an LSU Baseball game.

I did a job once where I had to travel to Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and several other midwestern states, the number of deer on the side of the road in corn country is nuts.

It was there during the winter which I'm not sure matters but it was a deer or two every mile or so.

Anytime im traveling upwards through Bama/Ga./South Carolina, ive seen alot of deer who dont make it across the interstates.

You can tell when the rut is by my house when the deer start stacking up on the side of 459. Hormones get to raging and they literally stop thinking.

Hawks and owls are the two weirdest I’ve seen around here.

In Wisconsin and MN i use to see bald eagles. They are carrion eaters and would be on the roads eating and get hit themselves.

Nothing unusual about a road kill squirrel, but what is unusual here is that from time to time it seems like they've made some kind of Jim Jones suicide pack. During those times the two miles of county road to my house will have a squooshed squirrel every 100 ft or so.

Nutria

Odd story about that:

In SE Louisiana, I see the occasional nutria roadkill alongside a highway or street, especially in suburban Metairie along the streets that run alongside canals (where they proliferate).

But in the late spring of 1983 when the semester was ending, my college roommate and I noticed a LOT of carcasses along I-10 in the swampy areas between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

We drove up from Metairie to take our last exams each; his was some ungodly hour like 7 or 7:30 AM so it was still dark when we were driving up.

Hundreds upon hundreds of those nocturnal creatures were crossing from one side of I-10 to the other, like a mass migration. My friend was driving, and was swerving the whole way up to around Sorrento avoiding those buggers, but still wound up squashing one or two.

Darnedest thing. Never seen it since.

Huh? Nilgai? They brought those here?

I dunno if I ever even seen one of those much less on the road dead. Weird.

used to travel dfw to se texas a lot. would use backroads from palestine to alto. bad road but cut time. came across a pack of feral cats one night, dozens of them, no way to avoid. was traveling from alto to elkhart, driving fast, topped a hill and a huge ostrich was standing on side of the road, had to be 6-8 foot tall. that will get your attention.

Yeah they were brought here from India i read.

I pass down 77 alot to do business with vendors along i2. I posted earlier where I saw a 7/8 ft gator dead on shoulder. If your heading well north of Refugio on 77 almost back to when it changes to 59/69 again but a few miles back as your heading north, their is a beautiful big pond on the right at the bottom of a hill. Top of the hill is a ranch. Gator must of came from that pond.

I usually dont travel further south than harlingon as you've shown on the map.

Nutria

I cant remember if it was fall or spring but one of our trips to Nola in the past 3 years we counted at least 50 dead nutria on i10 after we crossed the bridge. Must've been breeding season.

I'm in central Alabama and I see more dead armadillos than anything else. Surprising how many you see running around here.

Bears in Montana usually wind up as roadkill, as well as other larger animals. It's a sight to see.
