Open it open to all pilots that can past the test. I bet that an open market would do wonders for the $700k a year. You could probably cut that number by 65%

How many capable cruise ship captains are out of work and could make pretty easy transition (I know it’s different with, but it’s not like going from digging ditches to piloting ships)?

God forbid you tell them to frick off and save the state some money

They have pilot associations in a lot of inland waterways in the south besides Ms. River. Savannah, Mobile, St. John's River, FL. I assume they are prevelant on West and East Coast as well. Seriously doubt they are compensated any where near the levels we see in LA though.

All you hear is the news side of this. Most tug captains aren’t any where near $200,000 most are well below that. The guys that do well are pushing 40 barges or the chemicals that are extremely dangerous. Also what the news usually does not mention is that no state money is paid to a pilot. If you think that the pay is ridiculous here look at some of the ports other than Houston that can be double that Miss river and they do it without a river moving at 5mph.

How does a rb pilot make that and an airline pilot makes 150-200 k?

I assume because the one that pays more is more of a hazard to life.

It’s cute that you think their spouses and children can’t also contribute $5k annually.

In my 15 years in public accounting I had to disclaim one audit opinion. It was on an audit of a river pilot cost report. I call them river pirates.

Eat a dick, Nungesser. It's no surprise a short, fat, greasy baw with a history in Plaquemines would be buddy-buddy with the river pilot mafia.

I only know about river pilots from what I've read here over the years. But how were they allowed to have such a monopoly over this line of work as far as the nepotism and such. And why have state regulators allowed it to go on and just keep approving these pay raises to where they're all making over a half million dollars a year to ferry boats up the river?

Seems crazy that nobody has ever looked at it and though "hmm something isn't quite right here". I get they throw a bunch of money at politicians, but hell, so do other lobbies and I've never seen or heard of such a sweet deal that these guys have.

Ok, I’ve seen this for years now, but this is just hyperbole right?

no there are actual court cases on it

USSC Decision

quote:

Seeking relief in a Louisiana state court, they alleged that the incumbent pilots, having unfettered discretion under the law in the selection of apprentices, had selected with occasional exception, only the relatives and friends of incumbents; that the selections were made by electing prosepective apprentices into the pilots' association, which the pilots have formed by authority of State law;6 that since 'membership * * * is closed to all except those having the favor of the pilots' the result is that only their relatives and friends have and can become State pilots. The Supreme Court of Louisiana has held that the pilotage law so administered does not violate the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, 209 La. 737, 25 So.2d 527. The case is here on appeal from that decision under 28 U.S.C. § 344(a), 28 U.S.C.A. § 344(a).

quote:

The number of people, as a practical matter, who can be pilots is very limited. No matter what system of selection is adopted, all but the few occasionally selected must of necessity be excluded. Cf. Olsen v. Smith, supra, 195 U.S. at pages 344, 345, 25 S.Ct. at pages 54, 55, 49 L.Ed. 224.27 We are aware of no decision of this Court holding that the Constitution requires a state governor, or subordinates responsible to him and removable by him for cause, to select state public servants by competitive tests or by any other particular method of selection. The object of the entire pilotage law, as we have pointed out, is to secure for the State and others interested the safest and most efficiently operated pilotage system practicable. We cannot say that the method adopted in Louisiana for the selection of pilots is unrelated to this objective.

...

It is enough here that considering the entirely unique institution of pilotage in the light of its history in Louisiana, we cannot say that the practice appellants attack is the kind of discrimination which violates the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Former State Senator Francis Heitmeir, an EWE crony for decades, has a son who is a pilot. And not related to any other pilot. Not hard to guess how he got that job. That lobby & the nursing home lobby are 2 of the most powerful lobbies in the State. Pure raw, ugly La. politics at its worse in both cases.

If we continuing jacking up the pay it’s no way to remain competitive with those other places. Those people don’t give a shite about the overall health of the port, only that they get theirs.

I don’t completely disagree but I believe the pilots associations are making efforts to improve their diversity optics. Of the 5 pilots I personally know, 3 are black.

Why does the State of La. pay the RBC, and not the river boat company delivering the goods up/down port. Should be like a taxi driver, the farther you captain, the more money you make. WTF!
