Tests must be very difficult. Glad to see, from how you write/speak, that they require remedial English

Everything you said may be true, but they still aren’t worth that much money

Same with car dealerships

Sure, and I have no problem with someone making these decisions within their own private business. The difference is that when doctors, lawyers, or car dealership get greedy, their customers can kick them to the curb and go somewhere else.

Remove the nepotism and this becomes a 100k a year job with a 10 mile long list of qualified candidates.

they all passed the same exams and have comparable sea service.

Different licensing, endorsements, tonnage, as well as some licensed Capt’s are only allowed to work on certain waterways.

Just because you have a Capt license doesn’t mean you can operate a commercial vessel wherever you want

In order to be a pilot the first step one could take is to attended an maritime academy.

Nope. First step is having a dad who was a pilot or a big wig politician or finding a close family friend who is a pilot without kids to sponsor you. Then you can commit to maritime academy.

Imagine defending an industry with a 4 year degree requirement and a year of on the job training and then justifying their pay, when they make more than most doctors and surgeons do, and they make more take home pay than a lot of doctors and surgeons make pre-tax

Not to mention pilots have to climb aboard moving ships on rope ladders in all types of weather, have to deal with foreign crews who usually don’t speak English very well, and have to guide ships which are in unknown shape and can be very different in how they steer.

This, combined with the very few people good enough at it to get the job, allows me to understand the compensation.

The number of downvotes you've received surprises me. I assume most of those that downvoted have no issues with what professional athletes make.

What a crock of shite. The average Joe or Jane can go to one of those schools and get all the certs and the time on the water, and unless they're related to a pilot, there is absolutely zero chance they'll get into the association.

I have a lot of experience working around NOBRA pilots. The most entitled, most dickish people you will find on the water. I've no doubt that the pilots from the other associations are just the same.

Their job is not hard. They run the same stretch of river again and again and again. They can do it in their sleep. So what if it's a foreign crew? All they do is stand on the bridge and tell the captain, who will be able to speak English, what to tell the helm to do.

When I worked for Tri-G Marine in Baton Rouge, we brought one old NOBRA pilot to a ship at Exxon's dock. That fricker climbed the rope ladder all the way to the top rail of the ship when he had a heart attack, fell off, and hit the roof of the crew boat, leaving a nice dent. That shite royally fricked up that crew boat drivers head for a while. But he was kinda weird about shite to begin with. It wouldn't have bothered me. It's not like we killed him.

go look at what the degree entails. I’ll bet it’s a lot more than a business or mass com degree from any state school
