Why would anybody bother going to one of those 7 maritime schools for 4 years knowing they won’t ever get hired because they aren’t related to a current pilot?
Because there are other Cush Cush jobs out there making pretty damn good money

doesn’t that help in just about any industry. Doctors, lawyers and such
you're not prevented from being a lawyer or doctor b/c someone else only permitted their family and friends to take the bar/boards
that's the difference

Because you can still work on US flagged ships and make damn good money. Starting salary for 3rd mates which is the license you graduate with is between 75,000-90,000 a year. Only goes up from there

Sounds like any other high stress white collar job. Cry me a river.

Yes they get paid about 650,000 as I said before but they are considered independent contractors and thus have to pay about half of that back in taxes.
Yeah like everyone else, boo hoo

Newsflash, every person who makes a lot of money pays alot of taxes. Being an IC does not mean you are taxed exponentially more. They have to pay the employers's share of FICA, capped at a little over $8,000 and some extra Medi. Not significantly more than a salaried worker. They also get to deduct a lot of work related expenses that most W-2 employees would not get to.

i think people would be more receptive to the whole issue if the river pilots weren't so openly rampant with nepotism it's the combination of these jobs only being allowed to go to family/friends and the salaries that make people upset

No one is prevented from going to the maritime academy, spending years on a boat and getting their pilots license

Then you have to be approved by the pilot board to even start an apprenticeship and that consists of about a year of working and going with pilots. If all that goes well which for some people it doesn’t the association then has to vote you in. This is where the nepotism comes into play. Yes it greatly benefits you to have connections in order to get all of the votes you need, but is it necessary? No. There are plenty of people who have worked there butts off during their apprenticeship to build connections before they’re voted in, and it’s worked for them.
Do other ports have the blatant nepotism?

Compare Nola—-to Br and around rates for use of a pilot to rest of the US...
They protect there choke point ....can not blame them but it is why some corporations chose different paths...

One of my friend’s dads is a captain for Chouest and he’s all but guaranteed a job with them when he graduates

I'm not a CPA but I'm 100% sure that even if you are an independent contractor/1099 you will take home much more than 50% of your gross.
In this case I would set up an LLC and have payment made to it. Then I would set myself and possibly my wife up as employees of that LLC. Pay each of us a nice salary and lease vehicles for both of us. I would run as many personal expenses (Meals, etc) as I could through that LLC including the transportation fees and other costs listed by the OP. When I was done that LLC would have a loss and would pass to me individually reducing my overall tax burden.

How long are the river pilots gone at a time?
I honestly don’t care what these guys make. Capitalism is a beautiful thing. Just give every qualified individuals the same opportunity.

Wear and tear and miles on their own trucks.

The nepotism isn’t as bad as it used to be.
Just like anything else, it has a lot to do with connections, no doubt, but it also has a lot to do with experience.
Do you want so yahoo from Buras navigating a 500’ loaded ship full of jet fuel downriver just hoping he doesn’t crash into an Oil Refinery just because his last name is whatever?
That’s not what’s happening
These pilots are the best in the business and that’s why you hardly ever hear about any incidents.
