Aside from Bo Jackson, Ricky is the best pure athlete to ever play the game.

Anyone recall how he broke some record in the afternoon, & that night N. Ryan threw another no hitte

yep, Ryan threw his 7th no hitter that night and was very gracious and humble about it, Henderson acted like he just found a cure for cancer

As a kid that grew up loving Nolan Ryan, Ricky played the heel a lot in my childhood. Now that he's gone it hurts because we all know how good he was.

Roberto Clemente my friend.

I lived in Oakland for a while and saw Rickey play many times. He was known in Oakland as someone you did not mess with. Some players had some damage and theft from their cars at the ballpark. Rickey NEVER had a problem.
Saw him in a great barbecue place in Oakland called Flynt’s. He was ahead of me in line. He was an intense person, even about his ribs!!

He said he was ambiguous. Could hit from either side of the plate. And his NY penthouse had a 720 degree view of NYC

That earthquake game was the last baseball game I ever watched with my grandfather. I loved that team.

Nolan Ryan's 5000th strike-out victim.

Video of the at-bat.

I had the distinct pleasure to see him play several times that year in Oakland Stadium.
Would take the BART from Walnut Creek.

What a great player he was.

Bam, a single and he was on first.

Seems like just two pitches later he was standing on third.

Always referred to himself in the third person

Great ball player and gone too young from something that hardly kills people with today's medicine. Maybe there were more serious issues going on and that was just the straw that broke the camel's back.

As for speaking in 3rd person-----Not a good thing to hang his hat on since serial killer Ted Bundy did that same thing in many interviews I've heard over the years.

It is pretty odd when someone does that, and in Bundy's case I think it was his way to kind of separate himself from what he did by not saying the words "I or me" when describing how he kidnapped and murdered all those young women.

Rickey was a great leadoff hitter, but to claim greatest leadoff hitter of all time is recency bias based on this news. There is only 1 greatest leadoff hitter of all time. I'd put Rickey at Top 10-ish.

He is one of the best pure athletes of all time, but I'd put Barry Bonds above him. Few people know that Barry Bonds had over 500 stolen bases and ranks in the Top 30 all time in Stolen Bases. When you add that with over 750 home runs, over .600 on base percentage for some seasons, 200 Intentional Walks one season, batting over .330 many seasons. Over 600 doubles. Barry Bonds had more Triples than Rickey Henderson had over his career. I don't care if he was on Roids, that is still something we will likely never see again.

Pure strength, speed, and most of all Hand-Eye Coordination. Bonds had elite hand-eye, best of all time.

Most know him for holding the stolen base record, but he also has crushed the most career home runs when leading off a game, with 81 home runs.

I think the stolen base record may have overshadowed how great a player he otherwise was. He only won one MVP but probably b deserved at least one more.

When Rickey joined the Mets, he told John Olerud “I played with a guy in Toronto that wore a helmet in the field.”
John Olerud told him, “ Rickey that was me.”

ETA: Mel’s Diner GOAT

Went back and looked to see if I could find our old favorite diner. Could no longer locate it (if it still exists). It's been a very long time ago.

Walnut Creek has grown sooooo much since we were there. Back in the late 80's it had a very small, walkable downtown. We used to go drink beer at one of the local bars and enjoy the weather.

Those were the days. :)

But the Loma Preata (sp?) earthquake changed that for me, and I hightailed it back to Texas. Ha!
