Richland Parish teachers getting upwards of $50k bonus checks thanks to META

Many Richland Parish teachers are receiving sales tax bonus checks of more than $50,000 generated by the Louisiana Meta data center project.
Richland Parish Chamber of Commerce founder Scott Franklin told USA Today Network "vested, certified teachers" in the rural school district will receive $50,900 for what's known as the "13th check," while other teachers and staff will receive bonuses of more than $17,000.
The annual payouts are determined by sales tax collections, which have skyrocketed since Meta began construction on its $27 billion data center.
Our hope is that teachers across the state and the South see this and want to teach in Richland Parish," Franklin said in an interview with USA Today Network. "It gives our community the opportunity to attract top teaching talent, which in turn will elevate the education of our children, which they deserve."
Sales tax collections are expected to be elevated for at least three to five more years during the height of construction, though they aren't guaranteed.
"I'm confident this isn't a one and done," Franklin said.
Richland Parish Schools Superintendent Sheldon Jones hasn't returned texts and calls from USA Today Network, but Meta's Louisiana community manager said the company is pleased with the impact of the project.
"Educators in Richland Parish are doing incredible work, and we are proud that our contributions help support the teachers who are shaping the next generation right here," said Meta's Henry Thornton. "We're proud to be part of the Louisiana community.
Franklin's family sold the state the original 1,400-acre site on which Meta is building now more than 20 years ago for the Louisiana Department of Economic Development to market as an industrial megasite.
Meta announced its project in 2024.
"We knew from the beginning this was going to be a transformational opportunity for a region that was suffering an economic and population decline," Franklin said. "And one of the things we believed could transform was the trajectory of our school system

That’s awesome for those teachers.
Meanwhile Superintendents across the state are bitching and whining because Jeff told them to cut the fat & pay for their own teacher raises.

Guess which school system is about to get a TON of applications from propsective teachers.

Will they still collect property taxes on everyone, or just give it all to the teachers?
Posted on 6/11/26 at 1:53 pm to SoggyCerealClub
The should include all schools, public, charter and private.

Is it coincidence that the family of the head of the Chamber of Commerce happened to be the one that sold Meta the land?
What are the odds….? /s

I think the teachers deserve it when you consider that teaching is a 12 hour a day 12 months a year job and that teachers have to be an expert in every field to enlighten the new generation
The lack of respect for teaching heroes here is disappointing

This happened in DeSoto Parish at the height of the Haynesville Shale boom. I don’t think bonuses were ever this big but starting salary for first year teachers with a Bachelor’s and certification was damn good for the comparison and went up with years, # of certificates, graduate degrees, etc.
A buddy’s wife was in administration at one of the schools and said people from all over the state and elsewhere were calling trying to find out how to apply and set up interviews.

You're late. Already seen that comment from the tinfoil hat crowd who doesn't understand how closed loop systems work.

If they're going to have these stupid data centers, then they should distribute the "benefits" more evenly across the populace, rather than giving all of it to teachers who make up what, maybe 1-2% of the populace.

What a stupid stupid statement.
The school district has three funding mechanisms: federal, state, and local. The local portion is made up of property taxes and sales taxes.
The teacher salaries partially paid for by. Richland Parish clears out their tax collections with a true-up check to teachers and other employees (lunch ladies, bus drivers, etc). A lot of school districts do this. The monthly salaries are so pitiful that these checks are the only reason to teach in such a terrible school system.
Meta comes in, drops bank in the local taxes. Richland Parish is obligated by their own by-laws to pay out to the employees, so their employees collect a windfall. If the "local population" wants a piece of the action, they can get off their arse, get a teaching degree and go to work for the parish. Other than that, they deserve dick.

The state pastime. We’re our own worst enemy around here.
If we ever leave again it’ll be because we couldn’t take the non-stop negative attitudes anymore.

And absolutely no accountability from the teachers for the extra dough.

Inflation fixing to skyrocket over there with all this California money sloshing around.
Hopefully most people can actually get good paying jobs out of this. John Doe working at Dollar General ain’t going to get a big enough raise working the same job to afford California trending prices.

The last time I looked into it, the center in Holly Ridge would be an evaporative center, not a closed loop. It's been about a year, so that may have changed.

Correct. Every property taxpayer should benefit.

How do they distribute money to the family that drove through Richland Parish and spent money on food (which was taxed)?
