I'd rather a restaurant cut portion size by 20% than charge me an extra 20% on the bill. I rarely eat an entire plate of food when dining out anyway.

I don't mind paying an automatic gratuity for large groups.

We dined out in a large group the other night and did trip because thought that service charge was automatic gratuity. So the waiter got screwed.

If I had known it wasn’t a tip, I would have tipped.

You’re missing the point. The service charge is part of the bill now, if you don’t pay the bill, it will be considered as skipping part of the check.

Yeah, I got it.

I would pay the bill and service charge and leave a fat 0 in the tip line.

I may even leave a reason on my ticket.

Easy solution is dont tip.
Even easier, if they charge cancel the order and walk.

I've seen charges of about 3%, with an explation that it is for staff insurance costs and benefits. Mildly annoying. I've never seen a 20-22% service charge that was not an automatic tip.

Roux 61 was adding this to their bill last year. I asked the manager about it and he kindly explained to me that this is very common in industry. I kindly explained to him that if he expects me to pay 18% service charge plus tip he will not see me in his restaurant again.

I’m not sure if they have changed the policy since then.

I rarely go out to eat now because it’s stupid expensive. Let them price themselves out of business.

I needed something quick for lunch the other day and didn't have much in the house. I ordered a Chick-fil-A grilled chicken club.

Just the sandwich and nothing else. $9.29 with tax.

non-tippers (you know the type that send their food back after they had eaten half of it)

Want to bet this is the main reason for the service charge? Either to recoup or keep a certain demographic out.

I really don’t even go out to eat very much anymore because of how stupidly expensive it is

Next easiest solution - never go to that restaurant again and make the charge publicly known

Same here, and most of us likely wouldn’t even notice.

Eating out is such a drag at this point - Poorly trained staff. Crap shoot on food quality. Shitty patrons at the table next to me. Awful

The real issue is that restaurants are unwilling to reprint their menus with the current 20% increase in overall costs (both food and in some cases labor) knowing all well that once diners see the menu they will change their purchase decisions in the short term.

“That menu item I love went up $4? Maybe I will not buy that extra beer now” is a major concern because the markup on alcohol is so huge, and yet the easiest part of a menu to reduce in consumption or even outright eliminate from their dinning experience is alcohol.

It’s easier to apply a nebulous fee at the end and hope the guests don’t notice or take it out on their staff than to deal with it on the menu. It’s is extremely shortsighted, but was something that became a thing during COVID with the added costs for PPE and reduced seating capacity and now companies think the consumer will see the service fee/inflation fee as the same thing.

Personally, every place I have had charge me a fee like that I have stopped going to, but others may be more forgiving…

But there’s something less familiar at the bottom of the check — a service charge, tacked on with little explanation.

It’s a price increase without advertising the price increase

Yes but shouldn’t they disclose this upfront. When we visit our son in Australia it’s understood that tipping is included in the menu prices

ran into this last nite
the bartender was clear and honest as he dropped the check- "there's and 18% service charge on this"

and below the signature line on the slip had the math for 2%, 5% 8% and 10%

I normally tip 20%, so I filled in the 2% line. If they made a point to show 2%, my only assumption is that it's going the staff
