Until discipline and respect for authority is taught in low income households, this will continue.

shitty parenting cannot be overcome in large numbers
Kids who have no grasp on right or wrong tend to hang with kids in that same situation

There's not a lot government can do to "fix" the real issue... especially not in a time period that's measured smaller than generations. The government could do things that essentially foster moral training but those take decades to happen.
yeah the economic concept of "sunk cost" applies here, and it's fricked up because we are talking about kids, some who are really young
nobody wants to say "that child has no future" at 10 years old b/c it just feels cruel (and sometimes/often may be nothing more than cold and cruel responses to a fixable problem). however, at a certain point we have to admit reality in some of these cases
it feels good to think that by diverting resources to this population we will save them, but the data doesn't show this happens. in fact, i'd imagine the data shows the exact opposite and we're just burning money. it's worse than just failing at a "feel good enterprise" though, as those resources have to be sucked away from kids who DO have a future. this is more than just money. attention is a valuable resource in school. disruption by bad students gets them not only attention (therefore, taking it away from kids who aren't discipline problems) but it also eliminates the actual time available to educate the "good" kids
every year tens of thousands of good kids (in LA) from disadvantaged backgrounds get utterly fricked by the system in LA because they are never offered an educational opportunity because our system is geared towards diverting resources to kids who want to disrupt and destroy the school setting. THOSE are the kids who make my blood boil.
i'm not doing a pouty dance for the kids in suburban schools who could get a little more. i'm angry for the kids from lower SES backgrounds who are totally disadvantaged and trying to get an education to better themselves and their families moving forward. our system is arse backwards and completely abandons THOSE kids and basically ensures a sub-optimal future

LA spends LESS than the national average per pupil.
As the comments following the linked article suggest, the info is useless and all kind of wrong conclusions can be drawn from this. Things not factored in include: cost of living in different areas, class/racial makeup, school performance relative to school budgets, percentage of students in private schools, etc.
While many things factor into a child's education, parental oversight/attitude is by far the most important component, and NOTHING ELSE comes close.
How to fix this within our current social pc climate is what is frustrating.

I don't think the info is useless. But it does show that we are not spending some overly high amount on education, which was the line of reasoning in the comment that I responded to.
Whatever we are spending, though, our ROI is not great.

To SOME extent... the charter schools in NOLA are helping. If a parent is going to take the effort to apply to schools, etc, then they at least care a little bit. Some of the charters seem to really be trying. Some of the charters of course are nothing more than scams... but there are a lot of good ones as well.
But traditional public schools have greatly failed. Part of it is the ole 20/80 rule... 20 percent of the kids (the bad ones) take up 80 percent of the resources.

Sounds like the resources need to be utilized more effectively.

Your state has some of this figured out.

winner winner chicken dinner.....that's one reason there is no way in hell I'd send my kid to a public school in LA....they spend too much time with the dumbasses.
I can remember sitting in public school in 5th or 6th grade listening to some retard read a 4 sentence paragraph for 45 minutes that I had already read and comprehended 3-4 times on my own. No way that should be happening.....and this was at a decent public school at the time.

It isn't their fault. It is the parenting. Teachers try to help them and the kids go home and get screwed up again.

Efforts to appease the shittiest students does nothing but hurt the students who have a chance.

Don't worry you guys, this was just the first study. Tax payers sent 38 educators to Colorado and Texas just to reach this conclusion:
Tax payers will keep funding studies until education improves! And Traffic!

At some point we as taxpayers have to give up on them....it's a hard truth....we are wasting money to give kids an education that don't want one, won't accept one, and have no support system that wants them to get one. So at this point WTF else can we do.

Education starts at home. Most of the behavior problem kids are bringing their home situations to school. It is a hard, sad endless cycle at this point. Not endless, i could stop it, but still.

The system should be set up so that all kids start in the same prek or kindergarten and then the child earns their right to be pulled to a special school for smart/highly productive kids. You should earn that with academics.

that's called tracking, and while it's logical, it's basically the devil for the people who participate in studies like the one in OP

That has nothing whatsoever to do with whether the assignments are fair.

Well at least it’s no longer racist to admit that not all cultures are equal. Bc that’s what this is saying.
