Maybe it's time we have split schools based on culture. That way these kids will have "culturally sensitive" teachers

We pretty much already have in BR. The public schools are around 90% black I believe.

It's the average student who is getting screwed. Too many resources are expended on G & T/magnet Programs and programs for borderline retards and kids who just don't want to be at school and do nothing more than disrupt the classroom.

WAT

G&T and honors kids should get the most resources and be pushed the hardest.

Nothing is going to change, so have the alternative schools teach "Prison Survival 101."

Schools are meant to educate children. Not raise them.

What about teachers?

Maybe black neighborhoods in the future with black cops?

In addition, black students make up 44 percent of the public school population but 85 percent of those sent to alternative schools, according to the study.

Need a breakdown by parish before anyone can make a blanket statement such as this. Their are parishes that are vastly black and parishes that are vastly white. To throw them all together and then make the above statement is misleading.

Blood Boiling: [ON] OFF

i will never understand why people take steps to willingly devote resources away from good, productive students in order to try to "save" terrible, disruptive, and sometimes violent students with maybe a 1% chance of improving

The fact that people look to the state to do a job that should be done at home is truly amazing.

Once again, this goes back to parents having zero interest in raising their children properly.

Depends on the Parish/County

It's sad to say, but the reality is a lot of parents of kids in public schools don't give a shite about their children's education. The only time they care is when the kid is suspended or about to be kicked out of school. Even then, the reason they care is because they are about to lose their "free babysitter" (i.e. school). I've seen it happen multiple times.

There ARE good kids in public schools. But sadly, those students get treated as outcasts by their peers (and their peer's families) instead of good examples. The good kids need to be separated from the others so they can have a fighting chance to succeed.

Put the trouble makers in alternative schools and give the option to get out if they want to try to be good students. Bleeding hearts think the good students will "rub off" on the bad students and bring everyone up. The reality is just the opposite. Bad students bring everyone down.

I really hope you're not expecting the truth to be well received here. The minority socialists here aint got no time for dat..

Yeah, I'm gong to call BS on part of this report. Schools are too slow kicking out students / sending them to alternative schools. Why?

Because the geniuses that came up with the grading system for schools in Louisiana decided that schools grades should suffer if they suspend/expel too many kids. Therefore, principals have an incentive to NOT suspend/expel students. These little turds don't go to alternative school... they just stay in the regular school and screw things up for everyone else.

As far as alternative schools themselves... they deal with a small and transient population. I don't think there is any way you can have the same quality of teaching. Not when you have one teacher who is responsible for a variety of grades and subjects. I don't have an answer here... except that maybe if the kids weren't little shits they wouldn't get put in that situation.

So these people would suggest not sending a student because of the color of their skin? How progressive.

No, the parent(s) of those 85% need to take responsibility regardless of the cultural origin

it's more the esoteric "structural" issue

they're essentially arguing that since these are kids, they lack much individual agency. therefore, we have to look to larger issues that cause their behavioral issues. it's much easier for these people to make sweeping arguments about institutions, especially government, because the solution will be more money...for government to "fix" the problem

it's much easier to do this because you don't have to actually assess blame to people (avoiding criticizing parents, which turns into a black hole) and feel bad about that. instead you get to criticize a faceless "system" and get your real goal (more government spending)

The schools and state arent the problem

The parent is.

It can be both.

Better schooling and having more teachers who care can overcome shitty parenting.

Ultimately though yes, it's on the parent(s).
