And that's not enough for these people to pay their bills? I didn't see what appeared to be 100K a year people in that crowd. What they were getting was around 42K a year money. I doubt they were making that in the job they got laid off from.

Millions of people do it every day and have done it for decades. Are they living the best life in the suburbs somewhere? Probably not, but they make it work. They live, wait for it....within their means. Shocker, huh?

are you familiar with how leases, loans, and other contracts work?

You are talking in circles. You said "off 800 a week and a small check?"

Now you are saying when it runs out in a couple days. Which is it. That they couldn't make it off what they were getting or that they won't be able to in a few days? Can't have it both ways.

For those that lost jobs due to the virus, they were collecting $849 per week. Plenty enough to pay the rent, etc.

And for those who don't get unemployment because they didn't have a job anyway, then they just can't afford a home or apartment by themselves - corona or no corona.

I wonder how many across the country taking in same to much more money with unemployment & fed additional payment than with the jobs before Corona also took advantage of renter protection programs and quit paying rent.

The moratorium on evictions should have been ended as soon as the federal $600/week unemployment benefit was approved. You either still had your job and could continue paying rent OR you lost your job and were still getting $850/week in unemployment benefits and could afford continue paying rent.

The only person who got fricked were the mom and pops landlords who had to pay the past 4 months of mortgages, property tax, insurance, and maintenance while the government prevented them from being able to evict freeloader tenants who were pocketing $3500/month in unemployment benefits to spend on everything except paying their rent.

Not sure what that has to do with living within your means, but yes I am. And I've never signed my name to a lease, loan, or any other agreement where I can't afford the payments.

Welcome to socialism. Notice the age of these people? Our country had socialism implemented by a virus. We are doomed.

They were getting $850/week with state and federal unemployment benefits. That's a raise for most people in New Orleans, so there's no reason they couldn't afford to still pay their rent. They just took advantage of the covid renter protections that prevented their landlords from evicting them and used their rent money for shopping sprees.

Rent something you can afford.

Wonder where all that UI money went?

You know this has nothing to do with actual rent or paying rent right? When you hear about a protest concerning rent it is code for Marxist Rent Theory. The idea of private ownership of land is capitalistic and the fact that the government doesn’t own all land goes against the communist movement. I’d bet a lot of money this is a tentacle of antifa and goes with all the other organizations that are flowing out of it. I don’t know when we’re all going to wake and realize there is a communist uprising across America with all these different types of protests. It’s all flowing from the same slush fund.

Agreed....and there never should have been government mandates that businesses had to shut their doors for weeks/months at a time either

more than enough if you get a full 40 hours and don't have any kids and also don't insist on living in the Marigny/Bywater because its the hipster place to be. You can easily pay rent in Chalmette on $10 an hour with a roommate

are they supposed to break their lease to move? Or wait until they’re evicted, and still come up with the deposit and application money for a new place on their new $10/hour salary?

They are already in default of their lease agreement for non-payment of the lease specified rent. Landlord/Owner's did not receive a penny from the government for Covid related loss of rents.

So Landlord still has to pay the mortgage, insurance/taxes and operating expenses for the property. If the tenants don't pay rent, Landlord has to evict then and obtain a tenant that can PAY.
