I have a very negative opinion on marriage. I feel that in many ways, modern marriage has become a perversion of its intended form.

Family courts can ruin men if the wife makes less. Why is the opposite never mentioned (although in certain states the wife does pay alimony if she's the breadwinner)

Its become a broken system. The only practical reason a man sjould marry is to have kids and rear them in a nuclear family.

It hurts me to say this as I grew up Protestant. I know good marriages exist, but how do you know the other person is worth it.

Especially when you consider all the single mothers and divorcee wives, hooking up is like shooting fish in a barrel.

For those of you happily married or divorced, what makes you decide he/she is "the One"

like a lot of things in life...it's a gamble.you better your chances of winning if you date for a good while before taking the leap.

Convert to Islam. Then you can beat the shite out of her until she learns how to act. Plus, she has to walk behind you. Aloha snackbar.

it's more about losing the energy to chase, you find one thats not crazy and puts out and sometimes cooks, you want her to hang around

Everyone has problems with their marriage. 2 people from different backgrounds are going to disagree on things. Add in stress from life, work, kids and it makes things worse.

If you’ve lived with the woman beforehand and know her well then you are equipped to decide if you can put up with her shite and her craziness in marriage.

The people I know who get divorced are the “zomg I’m so in love let’s get married!!!” After a month types.

Don’t rush into anything, plan carefully and you’ll be fine.

One of the OT’s favorite subjects to be against the grain on.

Look - take marriage off the pedestal. It’s not perfect. It takes work. And even then, some work out and some don’t. For those that do, it can be great. You can chose to form your view of marriage by the negative outcomes or the positives, but life is a risk and I would never form all my decisions based on only the bad outcomes.

Been married for 21 years. It takes work, and many would rather quit than put that work in.

When has that ever been different?

There is no "the One", but if you meet a woman that you can trust, as in with finances, raising your children, sexually, etc, and I mean really fricking trust, and you want children, then marriage will have a better chance to succeed than not

Anytime you decide to enter a committed, romantic relationship, you are taking a leap of faith. Some people, such as yourself, are afraid to take such a risk.

That is understandable, because love/commitment is/can be painful, regrettable, and constraining. It also is/can be beautiful, fulfilling, and absolutely worth it.
