For trial. He was charged with extortion and wire fraud in the US. The murders were charged in Peru. And his US sentence was set to run concurrent with his Peru sentence, so he'll never see the inside of a US prison.

He's just tall. A lot of chicks don't care about much else. Probably especially true of malnourished hobbit-looking Peruvian chicks.
Tall chicks tend to see through the "lOoK aT mE I won thE heIgHt lOttERy bUt oFFer nOtHiNg Else" game, but there are a lot of short chicks out there, and they quite necessarily also have lower brain volume.
