Mississippi is secretly the best state in the south.
But everyone should retire to all the other southern states and continue trashing Mississippi.

1. Virginia - mountains (more of the AT in this state than any other), wine, big cities, countryside, the Bay, proximity to real big cities, change of seasons / snow, best standard of living in the South (education, income, you name it - look it up).
2. Texas - Just cause it's so diverse, something to please anyone, it's just a cool place.
3. Louisiana - cuz anything goes here...the way people live in La. is unlike any other state in the US - they live for TODAY.
4. Florida - I have lots of history and family here and have had a great time. Love the water, white powder beaches, fishing, heat and humidity.
5. South Carolina - Another state where anything goes. Born/raised in Chas. Love it.
6. Tennessee - love me some hills / hillbillies, real country on Broadway.
7. North Carolina - Much like Va but more bland.
Don't care about the rest. Spent too much time in Atlanta to have a good opinion of Ga. And too much time in south Al to think much of it.

1. North Carolina - Has it all with great roads. But too many people
2. Florida - I love the ocean, double coastline, and island towns. But too diverse and unfriendly.
3. Tennessee - East Tennessee is probably the cleanest place I've ever been in the south. Scenic. Love the weather in the mountains. West Tennessee not so much.
4. Alabama - Very pretty parks up north and great beaches on the coast. Would be higher if it weren't for gump football fans everywhere.
5. Mississippi - Coast has some great secret attractions and great food/restaurants. The state has plenty of hidden gems. The people are overrated though, and too many have no pride.
6. Arkansas - No coastal offering but pretty lakes and the Ozarks are really underrated. People are kinda weird though.
7. Georgia - Very scenic in the north and a lot of southern charm outside of metro Atlanta. Atlanta used to be a fountain but is now a drain.
8. Louisiana - The best food state and the most festive people around. Great fishing options but lags behind in natural diversity and beauty. If New Orleans wasn't so ghetto, I'd rank Louisiana a little higher
South Carolina - Never vacationed there
Kentucky - Never been

Nasdaq ranking of Southeast Places to raise a family. I live in #5 although it doesn't seem to match up with the others on the list. LINK

Western Kentucky has some of the most beautiful landscape and natural wonders you could ever hope to see. It's very underappreciated.

Texas isn’t a southern state. Should be taken off the list.

Fun Fact
Texas has the southern most Capital city of any state.
I'll allow it

Another fun fact - geography has nothing to do with “being southern”.
Texas is being taken over by diversity. From the south and from Cali. Neither of which are good things.

I am going to preface this by stating my opinion that I don’t count Texas as a southern state because I view it as it’s own thing. It’s partially southeastern, partially southwestern and that creates a unique mesh. Therefore I’m not counting it.
1. Mississippi - I put it first because the people. Mississippi has the nicest and most laid back people you will ever meet. The food is good. Beaches are decent. Has good hunting and fishing. It’s not overly populated.
2. Alabama
3. Louisiana
4. Tennessee
5. South Carolina
6. Georgia.

Virginia isn’t southern. North Carolina barely makes the list. Just because you aren’t northern doesn’t make you southern.
Mississippi and Arkansas are last.

None of the main Texas cities are located in East Texas. Houston does not count.

4. Georgia. Pure Southern essence.
And votes for good ole uncle joe!
I still say that something was afoot in Fulton County to get old Uncle Joe across the finish line in GA. A "water main" leak was used as an excuse to evacuate the building while votes were being tallied, then suitcases full of ballots started appearing from beneath benches and tables. The state is southern, the government and Atlanta - not so much.
