Good list overall

If Joy of Life is core to list, Louisiana should go way higher (including its warts and all) and Texas should go way lower.

Have lived in TX 3 times for over 10 years total. LOTS of good things in TX, including people. But LOTS of things I'd rather do without.

I left in 1994, right after Edwards vs. Grand Wizard. Was never coming back.

LA -> TX -> CA -> IL -> TX -> UK -> LA -> TX -> LA

About half way through the journey, I remembered just how important to me the spirit of life and people and the culture that enables it is most important...and how many other U.S. places are bleached and vapid, just everywhere US places.

LA roots planted deeply again. Warts and all...

Ranked by where I'd choose if I were to move back to the South:

Tennessee
North Carolina
Virginia
Arkansas
Georgia
Alabama
Florida

...all the rest tied for last

I'd rank it ahead of Mississippi. Maybe ahead of Kentucky but not really as a slight to Kentucky. KY is a much more aesthetically pleasing state but LA is definitely more interesting.

First tier - NC, GA, VA, TN - all have weaknesses but all have lots of pros that keep them about the same. Splitting hairs maybe NC and TN first then the others.

Second tier - AL and SC

Third tier - Miss and LA

Not ranked, but would be first tier - TX and FL

"East Texas" in Houston is meant to be "more like Louisiana than us" and is their buffer to BAW, so to speak.

Perspectives...

On this (east) side of Sabine, I have always viewed LA's warts (real as they are) as a buffer to vapid people. Prefer they stay where they are.

Hard to say

A few states are just meh. Really bring nothing to the table
Alabama for instance…. If not for some coastal areas…. It’s just blah. Maybe lake Martin. Maybe some hunting areas but Louisiana has that too.
So they’re near the bottom

Mississippi. Again, except for some coastal areas, iit’s meh. Bay St. Louis is great but the redneck attitude gets old. Pass Christian is nice but it’s destroyed. Casino’s? Nah. Their education infrastructure is crap. They have no airports and no cities. Just a backward arse hick state. So they’re near the bottom.
Arkansas? Mmmm…. Never really been but I think it could have some game. Mid to upper tier.
South Carolina? Yeah… I like that state. Some coast and some mountain. Good people too. Upper tier
North Carolina disappoints me politically. Nice state though. Upper tier
Georgia? Yeah, it’s got some game. Coastal area is great. I love sea island. Hate Atlanta. Mid tier.
All others are just mixed bags.

Otherwise,
Fishing and coast is the key. Florida has the best fishing and coastal combo.
Louisiana is number 2 but close except for the coastal areas. Sorry but grand isle doesn’t get it. Fishing is awesome though.

1. Tennessee (plan to live in east TN one day, parents have a place there.)
2. Kentucky (just because it is nice country)
3. Alabama
4. Texas
5. Arkansas, Missouri, Georgia, Carolinas, Virginia (no opinion)
6.Florida (would have been higher, but I hate Disney World)
10. Louisiana (Other than the food, I hate living here)

1. North Carolina - Beautiful state. Smart people. Diversity of thought.

2. Georgia - economic powerhouse. Good people.

3. Texas - Great state for business. Tons to do. Great diversity of cities.

4. Kentucky - Beautiful topography. Bourbon country. Kind people.

5. Florida - No state tax and beaches. You can live the life in Miami or Tampa or be a Florida scumbag in the everglades. Something for everyone.

6. Tennessee - No state tax. Beautiful mountains. My only gripe (and why it's plainly not higher) is that Nashville has become a cheezy, Disney world of country music and bachelorette parties.

7. Arkansas - Really, just NW Arkansas. But it carries enough muscle with walmart and some of the most beautiful landscape I've ever seen in fall.

8. Virginia - Really a very "meh" state. Nothing wrong with it. Not much that blows my skirt up, either.

9. Mississippi - I really, really like Mississippi. I love Oxford. The people are amazing. There just isn't a ton of commerce and it's not a place I could move to, unless I was retired.

10. Alabama - The University of Alabama is a special place. The rest of the state (Huntsville, excluded) is nothing special. People from Birmingham are a sims character of what I imagine I'd look like before I killed myself. There's more to life than golf and the Iron Bowl.

11. South Carolina - Hot, muggy, racist. Charleston is great, but I could do without the rest of it. Talked down to by North Carolina for good reason.

12. Louisiana. This is like the freshman bars in Athens, GA. It's a lot of fun when you're 18. BR, NOLA, the whole lot. After that, you realize that's politically the dumbest state in the union (both parties), the populace is drunk and lazy, the weather sucks, and the "sportsman" activities can be replicated other places. Saturday night in Tiger Stadium aside, there is nothing positive to say about the current state of the Louisiana.

Because it’s not. It’s in its own category. East Texas is anything from Beaumont up to Texarkana. North of 105. East of 45. That’s ETX.
