Random gym question

I noticed the other day that several people walk up to the squat rack and remove the "spotter" bars even though they were well below how far down they would ever squat (I could understand if someone had them set way up high). I've also noticed many will do their squats outside of the rack. What's the purpose of it? I can understand that you have the full capability of lifting that weight and don't feel the need for the safety system, but it's not getting in your way, so why go out of your way to not use it? I'm a novice, but I just don't get it.

I had a buddy that took the bar out of the rack because he said when squatting it threw off his balance inside the rack.

Spotter bars are for the gays. That's why

It's best to squat outside of the rack with a ton of weight to show how badass you are and that you don't need a spot.

I move them so people dont question whether I can move this heavy arse weight.

That rack is for curls not squats

If you don't need the spotter bars you arent lifting heavy enough.

I am in the gym 6 days a week and wonder the same thing. Keeping the spotter bars in makes sense to me. I keep them in (moved up some) when I do overhead presses in the rack. Particularly if you are moving good weight, why someone doesn't want that safety factor is beyond me.

Some people feel weird being inside the cage. Even though they know they won't hit anything, it makes you feel like you're going to hit something and you lose your concentration.
I know it sounds weird, but I understand it. Whatever you need to do to concentrate on your form, I'm all for it (within reason).

This. But also the macho stuff too, lol

I kind of understand how someone may feel weird in the cage (although I don't personally ever feel that way). The rack that you just walk forward and put it up is a different story
If I'm dropping arse to ankles, I have to get out of the rack (granted it's never much weight), but otherwise, I'm not close to hitting anything, yet I'll see people make the extra effort to back completely out of the rack. A few of the shorter women I understand, but the guy throwing 405 lbs on there and barely bending his knees has nothing to worry about.

I like to fart loudly when doing squats. The spotter bar makes that harder.

Always use them for heavy squats...set them as high as possible without messing with my depth below paralell.
More troubling than the OPs question is idiots who think they are bad arse and load up the bar with heavy weight and go less than paralell.

It's because people are morons. I don't care how much weight you have on that thing, sometimes you have to bail on a lift.
I'm slowly but surely teaching my dad how to lift weights, and anytime we do a new lift, the first thing I show him after proper form is how to abandon the lift, especially with the more dangerous lifts.

when getting out of the confines of the rack, we're marking additional gym territory. this space is mine, back the frick off.

I figured. Just wanted confirmation. I'm going to start doing everything outside of the racks to be one of the cool kids too. Although if I just wear sweatpants to the gym and concentrate on chest and biceps, there's no reason to hit up the squat rack anyway
